Job Summary:

To manage, maintain and develop the Property Group to ensure accurate, efficient underwriting and overall compliance with Beazley Furlonge Limited policies and objectives.

To be accountable to the members of Beazley Syndicates through Directorship of the managing agent.


Corporate Governance:

  • To serve on Beazley Group subsidiary boards as requested.
  • To comply with the requirements of FSMA 2000 and Lloyd's by laws and minimum standards.
  • In accordance with FSA's approved person regime to fulfil role of Director (CFI).

Key Responsibilities:
Management of Business Procedures and Underwriting


Responsibility for all aspects of management of the Property Business Unit including business planning, resources, business processes, expenses and underwriting.


  • Develop and implement business strategies for the Unit in agreement with the Boards.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate and maintain the underwriting unit to achieve business objectives and target profitability.
  • Monitor the portfolio and take corrective measures if necessary to ensure longterm profitability.
  • Build network of underwriting professionals by focussing on competency and skills development and recruitment and by monitoring the performance management process.
  • Ensure that own and underwriting unit activities comply with all relevant company, regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Represent all Beazley plc companies externally to customers, the industry, and other organisations, to ensure that its reputation and capability are positively perceived.
  • Responsibility for the Property team reinsurance purchases in accordance with corporate guidelines.
  • Underwrite within the scope provided by the Syndicate's reinsurance programmes and keep the lines within any sublimits imposed by reinsurers.
  • Ensure coverholders and other delegated authorities operate within the terms of the contract and to appropriate standards.
  • Ensure the classes of business authorised to underwrite are followed and adhered to strictly within the parameters set and guidelines agreed to for the Property Team.
  • Lead the team in developing best practice and disseminating the learning within parameters of Beazley Group underwriting guidelines.
  • Development and maintenance, in conjunction with the Board, of expenses policies and budgets for the team.
  • Direct and monitor development and ongoing enhancement and modifications to underwriting processes and systems to optimise effective administration.
  • Accountability for the effective management of owned risks and liaison with Risk Management in maintaining and communicating up to date risk information regarding changes in existing or new risks, as well as significant control failings/weaknesses or events that may arise.
Property Team Leader

  • Responsibility for management of the Property team including business planning, underwriting and claims, and with responsibility for the Property product worldwide.
  • Develop and implement business strategies for the team.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate and maintain the team to achieve business objectives and target profitability.
  • Monitor the portfolio and take corrective measures if necessary to ensure longterm profitability.
  • Ensure that own and team activities comply with all relevant company, regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Encourage, motivate and manage direct reports.
  • Provide proactive oversight of all Property underwriting and related functions within the Property team.
Underwriting

  • Develop and underwrite a profitable portfolio of Property business as part of the Property team.
  • Underwrite major accounts and complex cases and provide counsel and advice on underwriting related issues.
  • Structure tailormade solutions by considering the team underwriting parameters and underwriting policy and using underwriting knowledge and experience to win new business and retain existing.
  • Monitor premiums, costs and claims ratios per contract and take corrective measures if necessary to ensure long term profitability at account level.
  • Evaluate appropriate risk premium by considering the risk costs, reinsurance cessions, capital exposure as well as the underwriting and general administration costs to ensure profitability, using rating models as applicable.
  • Monitor peer underwriters in their daily work to ensure profitability as well as efficient and cost effective administration of the Property account.
  • Monitor and supervise assistants in their daily work to ensure compliance with underwriting philosophy and policy and consistency within the team and Property.
  • Comply with Beazley's underwriting control standards for business written through Lloyd's or Beazley's internal MGAs.
