    Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

    NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith.

    NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog.

    As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

    About the role

    "NRS is an organisation which is responsible for sustainable decommissioning of the fleet of First-Generation Commercial Reactor Sites and redundant nuclear research facilities. In recognition of our expertise, Future Missions will also include decommissioning of UK's Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors as these stations complete their operational and defueling activities.


    The safe packaging and storage of legacy and operational radioactive waste, prior to off-site transport and disposal, requires detailed technical work to ensure appropriate underpinning of containers and specify the conditioning required to produce a suitable waste form.

    This opportunity is for a Disposability Author who will be responsible for preparing disposability cases including provision of technical advice to projects and preparation of Letter of Compliance submissions to Nuclear Waste Services, future operators of the UK Geological Disposal Facility.

    Key Deliverables:
    Provision of technical support to projects and sites throughout the lifecycle of waste management to support design decisions and operations
    Being a subject matter expert in Nuclear Waste Services Waste Package Specification and Guidance Documentation and their application to disposability cases
    Delivery of disposability related technical underpinning e.g. gas generation cases, impact performance, waste inventories etc.
    Preparing disposability cases to ensure compliance with the requirements of relevant facilities (e.g. Letter of Compliance submissions)


    Qualifications and Experience:
    A minimum of degree level or other equivalent qualification in science/engineering (essential)
    Knowledge of higher activity waste management, especially containers and conditioning methods (essential)
    Chartered in a relevant science/engineering discipline, or demonstration of equivalent experience (desirable)
    Knowledge of containers and disposal arrangements for other categories of radioactive waste (desirable)
    Knowledge of transport requirements for radioactive waste packages (desirable)
    Preparation of submissions to Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) and/or assessment work for NWS (desirable)
    Involvement in the development of strategy/optioneering for waste management projects (desirable)
    Direct experience having worked with projects/sites producing or handling higher activity waste packages (desirable)


    Please note the successful candidate will need to be located within a commutable distance of one of our NRS sites and will be expected to work there a minimum of 2 days per week.

    Flexible working – where possible.
    The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year).

    This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year).

    You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year).

    For the purpose of assessing an employee's annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.

    There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
