    The Centre for Student Development and Leadership (SD&L) supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive student engagement framework through programming and leadership on best and promising practices across faculties and programs for students at all levels of study, and across all faculties and programs at UBC Vancouver.

    This includes programming in support of the first-year experience, programming and initiatives for students in the upper years of their undergraduate degree as well as graduate students to achieve the strategic outcomes articulated in the Student Strategic Plan.

    The Centre supports personal and professional leadership development for students seeking to enhance the experiences of other UBC students and contribute to respectful, inclusive and accessible communities at UBC.

    The Student Development and Leadership Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing effective strategies within a student experience framework to support a culture of learning, leadership, involvement, and service for all students at UBC Vancouver.

    The incumbent contributes to the planning , delivery and review of programs and initiatives.

    The incumbent will manage teams of staff and student staff and will work in very close partnership with other staff and faculty, student organizations and student government (AMS/GSS), academic departments, and other Student Affairs departments to coordinate and deliver programming across the following portfolios:
    the Student Experience, Student Learning, Leadership Development, and Student Involvement.

    The incumbent will work within a team of Student Development and Leadership Advisors and Coordinators who work in partnership with members of the campus community to contribute to positive living and learning environments at the University of British Columbia.

    The Advisor reports to the Associate Director, Student Development. The Advisor is a member of the Centre for Student Development and Leadership staff team.

    The Student Development and Leadership Advisor will be expected to work in strong collaboration across the Centre for Student Development and Leadership team, to both lead and support teams of student staff and volunteers, and to work independently to complete assigned duties.

    This position will also be expected to help build, articulate, and implement programming that reflects the deep connections between successful orientation/transition, leadership and involvement and positive career development for students.

    This position works closely, and in cooperation, with colleagues in Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS), Admissions, and Faculties to create joint program goals and ensure that programs serve the needs of students across their various points of connection with UBC.

    Throughout peak periods there is the possibility for additional stress and pressure when managing complex programs and ensuring they are delivered at high quality and within the required time frame.

    The incumbent may be required to live in residence for the duration of the Jump Start one week immersion program and fulfill on-call responsibilities during this time.

    Work outside of the normal operating hours of the University will be required, including evening and weekend work.

    The Student Development and Leadership Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing effective strategies within student experience framework to support a culture of learning, leadership, involvement, and service for all students at UBC Vancouver.

    The Student Development and Leadership Advisor will be contributing to and collaborating on the design, coordination, and delivery of programs and services in the areas of Student Experience, Student Learning, Leadership Development and Student Involvement that support and enhance student engagement and learning.

    Carryout the ongoing development of a culture of learning, leadership, involvement, and service for all students within the Centre and UBC.

    Develop, assess and implement engagement strategies in support of student development and leadership programming.

    Research, design, deliver and assess learning approaches and resources for UBC students, and enhancing the overall pedagogical approaches to program delivery in the unit.

    Oversee the delivery of a range of learning initiatives including, course-embedded initiatives, co-curricular supports and services, peer programs, student leader training, and contextually-specific learning initiatives embedded in core student engagement activities at UBC.

    Develop and deliver trainings, workshops, and resources for students, faculty, staff, and student staff intended to increase capacity for advancing student development and leadership initiatives at UBC.

    Provide expert advice to UBC students, staff, faculty and community partners on developing, delivering and participating in student development and leadership experiences that directly serve shared objectives of learning, leadership and involvement.

    Research and develop new techniques and resources for engaging a broad cross-section of on and off-campus communities.

    Work in deep partnership with other units at UBC on issues of shared interest and concern, seeking the greatest impact achievable for UBC students.

    Carry out the ongoing design and delivery of programs and initiatives for students at all levels of study, including, but not limited to: building community and sense of belonging, identity and values development, equity, diversity and inclusion, leadership, personal and professional development, academic success, and skill development in close consultation with academic, community and student partners.

    Develop the capacity of Centre staff and student staff to deliver and evolve program content; Engage in and resolve complex matters that arise preceding to, and throughout the implementation of programming and initiatives with the goal of enabling high quality learning and engagement opportunities.

    Escalate issues to senior staff as appropriate.
    Analyze program data and communicating findings and recommendations via prepared briefs and reports related to initiatives.

    Manage the deployment of Centre-wide administrative systems and processes, which enable consistent and ongoing engagement across all CSD&L programs and initiatives.

    Develop, assess and implement administrative systems in support of student development and leadership programming

    Identify opportunities and manage the creation and delivery of Centre-wide staff training to adopt and maintain systems, as required.

    Manage ongoing development and delivery of processes and systems to ensure effective program documentation and communication, enabling the Centre to evaluate and assess its work.

    Monitor risk and implements emergency standards and procedures as needed.

    Manage a central register of student engagement activities to facilitate event promotion, monitoring, evaluation and effective shared learning across the organization.

    Manage special projects as operationally required, including:

    Identification of opportunities for CSD&L to respond to emerging needs and issues based on community input and/or research findings.

    Recommend and develop new pilot initiatives that are emergent from the UBC community or UBC students based on knowledge gaps identified.

    Participates on cross campus committees charged with responsibility for programs or initiatives to support student engagement, representing the views and perspective of the Centre for Student Development and Leadership in a thoughtful and clear way.

    Decisions have an impact on the development of relationships both within the university and in external communities. Decisions affect the success of these initiatives at both university and community levels.
    This position is supervised and works under the direction of the Associate Director, Student Development and Leadership. This position works autonomously within general guidelines towards the achievement of overall department and university goals. This includes making decisions on program development and implementation against unit goals.

    Manages one or more Student Development and Leadership Coordinators and oversees a large student and volunteer staff team in the coordination and delivery of Student initiatives and programs.

    This includes responsibility for hire, discipline, training, evaluation, performance management, and termination.
    Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own
    • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
    Master's degree preferred.
    Experience working a post-secondary environment in program development, program management.
    Experience coordinating complex programs including development, planning, and implementation of ideas collaboratively with stakeholder groups.
    Proven ability to organize events and coordinate student development programs. Ability to work with and support a diversity of people in a calm, respectful, and effective manner.
    A highly motivated, creative person with outstanding critical thinking.
    Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
    Experience in a Windows-based environment, good knowledge of Internet technologies and willingness to learn to use new systems.
    Experience in university residence life or equivalent would be an asset.

    Previous experience with supervision of staff and student staff (including hiring, training and performance management) would be an asset.

    Knowledge of the field of leadership development, career development, student development and related literature and research an asset.
