Job summary
Maternity Care assistants in the Antenatal Clinic play a vital role in the care of pregnant women, working under the direction of Midwives.
The post holder, under supervision and after training, will assist the multidisciplinary team in delivering individualised planned care in a safe and healthy environment which promotes equality for all individuals.
Main duties of the job
One of the main duties is the running of the first trimester screening clinics. This involves seeing women after they have had their ultrasound scan, completion of their notes and paperwork and taking blood from them. Maternity Care Assistants also assist in the running of antenatal clinics and the Maternity Assessment unit, performing observations such as blood pressure measurements and urinalysis, taking blood and also carrying out a range of duties including cleaning of equipment, ordering supplies and replenishing stock.
As this is an Antenatal outpatient clinic please note this role does not include the care of newborn babies.

Job descriptionJob responsibilities
Ability to get on well with people at all levels and work effectively as a team member.
Work within the multidisciplinary team supporting the delivery, assessment and evaluation of programmes of care.
Under guidance, deliver safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using equipment and resources safely and as appropriate.
Use discretion and understand the importance of confidentiality and data protection.
Understand and adhere to Trust policies and procedures.
Undertake specific delegated tasks following the appropriate training and competency level assessment record observations, perform phlebotomy
Communicate appropriately and effectively.
Input and retrieve patient information from computer based systems in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
Assist with the physical and emotional care of mothers and babies breastfeeding, baby baths.
Provide basic health education and support with parenting skills, using tact and sensitivity as necessary.
Participate in the induction of new maternity care assistants and apprentices.
Contribute to the maintenance of a clean and tidy environment.
Assist with stock ordering and supplies maintenance, including CSSD supplies.
Assist whilst midwives are conducting births
