Application Support Engineer (Unix / Ansible)

Hybrid: 2 days remote / 3 days onsite in Camberley

£675 - £700 per day

In short:
App Support Engineer with solid Unix and Ansible playbook experience required to join an international bank. We'd expect you to have scripting experience with Shell or Python. Jenkins would be nice but we can bring you up to speedon that.

To be clear: This isn't a full-on DevOps Engineering role and it's not a Sys Admin either; it's in the middle._

This role facilitates deployment of technical solution by developing templates, playbooks and automation used during implementation. They consistently look for opportunities to improve the reliability and efficiency of implementing the services. This individualembraces a culture that drives innovation and continuous improvement.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Assist in translating business requirements into technical definitions, reference models, blueprints, and playbooks for deployment in compliance with architecture standards and policies.
  • Follow reference models, blueprints and playbooks to ensure the design is compliant.
  • Contribute to the technology strategy for endtoend engineering solutions and provide feedback to the architecture teams.
  • Support an inclusive and healthy working environment.
  • Assist Technical Analysts by ensuring system design technology solutions comply with enterprise system design and engineering standards.
  • Configure and maintain the set of tools and services that provide Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) services.
  • Work with Infrastructure and Solutions Engineers to understand changes in CI/CD service platform components and behaviours.
  • Monitor and respond to alerts based on the infrastructure key performance indicators (KPI)
  • Work with monitoring tools and Application Development teams to enhance monitoring capabilities and modify monitoring dashboards for new observability plans created in support of initiatives or continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develop software or system scripts to simplify or eliminate the dependence on human intervention for recurring tasks.
  • Contribute to a catalog of extensible reliability tools and libraries that can be leveraged for common instrumentation, automation, and operational needs by both Application Production Services (APS) and Application Development teams.
  • Work with Production Support teams to perform knowledge transfer, playbook updates and training for new monitoring capabilities.
  • Identify vulnerabilities and opportunities for reliability improvement, such as investigating low level error rates and 'noise' in monitoring and to help define solutions to reduce manual support effort and/or improve system reliability.
  • Participate regularly in an oncall rotation with Production Support teammates to learn more about reliability issues affecting their portfolio

Required Skills:


  • Experience in supporting infrastructure in a large enterprise environment
  • Strong experience as a Linux or Windows Systems Admin/Engineer with the ability to troubleshoot and perform rootcause analysis
  • Familiarity with MS-SQL, Oracle and how to perform basic queries if needed.
  • Good understanding of Change and Incident Management processes
  • Understanding of Agile projects, roles, and development support
  • Understanding and ability to use Monitoring tools
  • Scripting and automation with Visual Basic, Perl, python or PowerShell in a DevOps environment
  • Hands on experience using CI/CD tools including Jenkins, Ansible, Subversion, Git, JIRA and Confluence is a major plus
  • Good understanding of centralised logging tools like Splunk is a plus.
