Head of Bereavement Education and Safeguarding


BMC Recruitment is delighted to be working exclusively with Scotty's Little Soldiers, the charity for bereaved British Forces children, to assist them in finding a Head of Bereavement Education and Safeguarding to join the team on a permanent basis.


Background


Scotty's Little Soldiers are a UK national Charity which provides support for bereaved military children and young people aged 0-25.

They currently support over 600 children and young people and have a long-term goal of supporting over 1,000 by 2030.

They deliver 4 family programmes; SMILES, SUPPORT, STRIDES and SPRINGBOARD, which provides a range of emotional and education support for bereaved military families.


The role will be responsible for educating the team, and Scotty's wider community, on the challenges faced by bereaved young people from military families and how they engage with those families.

You will be the voice of children and young people within the charity, and will lead our Scotty's Council, made up of Members and Springboarders

You will ensure that Scotty's sets the benchmark when it comes to the safeguarding of young people.


Duties & Responsibilities
This role will be Directly Supported by the Head of Service. As a guide here are some of the responsibilities likely to fall within that remit.

  • Overseeing the development of the Scotty's Council, including the running of a series of meetings throughout the year with a minimum of one inperson event.
  • Engaging the Council to drive impact on our decision making at the charity and ensuring the voice of CYP is listened to.
  • Ensuring all safeguarding policies, related checks, and training are kept up to date.
  • Developing a safeguarding policy which is best in class.
  • Developing a continuous education programme within the charity, relevant to roles, to ensure our team have a high level of childhood bereavement understanding.
  • Advising the wider team on bereavement related activity this could include social media content, our one to ones with CYP, the worksheets we produce etc.
  • Providing the team with the skills they need to include bereavement within their roles, without the need for everything to be 'approved'.
  • Provide internal supervision for front line team members.
  • Helping the charity to become a thoughtleader when it comes to bereavement in the military community.
  • Providing external training to other organisations within the military community.

Person specification

  • Experience of working with bereaved children and young people
  • Relevant professional qualification in working with children and young people.
  • Understanding of the needs of bereaved children, young people, and their families.
  • Previous responsibility for running group sessions with young people.
  • A passion for education others and taking pride in their success.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to present to large audiences inperson or online.
  • A commitment to safeguarding with excellent knowledge of legislation, policies and processes.

Working arrangements:

Scotty's are a flexible working employer. Ideally you will be able to visit their office in King's Lynn at least twice a week.

All team members are required to spend a minimum of 6 days in East Anglia for team building days, strategy sessions etc.

This role will also require days to attend Council meetings, and events with a strong bereavement element, some of these events may take place at weekend or evenings but are planned well in advance.

Up to £40,000.00 per year
