CHASM and Birmingham Business School


CHASM (Centre on Household Assets and Savings Management) is an interdisciplinary research centre which undertakes cutting edge research into the local and global challenge of financial risk and insecurity facing a growing number of households.


Our work focuses on understanding the challenges households face, and producing research evidence of the highest quality to improve financial wellbeing.

This is an exciting time to join the CHASM team, as we tackle these pressing problems against a backdrop of a cost-of-living crisis and high income and wealth inequality.

Our research agenda is diverse and falls under three main themes:
Wealth, Assets and Inequality; Poverty, Precarity, Saving and Debt, and Risk and Financial Wellbeing in Later Life.

The CHASM core team is made up of over ten members of staff with varied disciplinary backgrounds from across the School of Social Policy and the Birmingham Business School, as well as honorary research fellows and internal and external associate members.

Birmingham Business School has a reputation for leading international research.

Its faculty has published articles in journals such as the American Economic Review, American Economic Journal:

Macroeconomics, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Monetary Economics, Management Science, Review of Economics and Statistics, and Review of Financial Studies.

We are successful in obtaining research grant funding with recent awards from, among others, the ESRC and Leverhulme Trust.


Role Summary

  • Work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing bids
  • Operate within areas of finance and economics
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Analyse and interpret research findings and results

Main Duties
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars, policy briefings etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Contribute to Departmental/School researchrelated activities and researchrelated administration
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • These indicative responsibilities may also be included in a research role at grade 6.

Person Specification

  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area (finance or economics) or equivalent qualifications
  • Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or near to completion) or an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • High level of skills in microeconometrics and/or estimation and simulation
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Coordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to act
