Description

Volunteering with Living Without Abuse (LWA) can be a very rewarding experience and you will gain many useful personal and professional skills, as well as making a huge and positive difference to victims of domestic and sexual violence.

LWA deliver domestic abuse and sexual violence support for survivors across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

We provide information and options to enable the service user to make informed decisions, including information on:


  • Safety planning
  • Legal rights and remedies and introductions to appropriate professional legal services
  • Welfare benefits
  • Housing options including refuge
  • Further educations and leisure pursuits
  • Counselling

Role:

Support with providing a pro-active service for children and young people who have been victims of or witnesses to domestic abuse.


Main responsibilities:


  • Work alongside and providing support to the Children and Young People's Domestic Abuse Workers.
  • Provide appropriate and effective services to children, young people, and parents, including risk assessments, safety planning, housing options, legal rights, and referrals to other agencies.
  • Support young people going through the Criminal Justice System.
  • Support with recovery focused group programmes and parenting support.

What skills do you need:


  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Listening and the ability to communicate well with a variety of people is essential
  • Punctuality, reliability and a commitment to volunteering
  • Ability to empathise and be nonjudgmental
  • The ability to work under some pressure, and to manage a varied workload
  • Experience of working with young people
  • Prior knowledge of domestic and/or sexual violence is desirable, but not essential as training is provided
  • The ability to use own initiative

What training is provided?
Training will be provided for the role and you need to be able to commit to attending the training.

We provide a comprehensive set of training, including domestic and sexual abuse awareness, safeguarding, DASH risk assessment, and vicarious trauma.

Training must be completed prior to you commencing your role as a volunteer. Further training opportunities to enhance your learning are provided throughout the year.


You will have the opportunity to shadow workers as part of your induction and regular support and supervision will be provided.

Our current training programme is delivered through a mix of e-learning and face-to-face sessions.

Our next training dates are on Thursday 1st August and Thursday 29th August 2024 and will be held in the Loughborough area of Leicestershire.


What commitment is required?


Ideally you need to be able to give a minimum of - 6 hours a week on a regular basis for up to a year.


Would expenses be paid?
Travel and other out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed to all volunteers.
