    Call-out for writers and storytellers

    Ignite Hubs is looking for a new author to support our mission of igniting an interest in STEM.

    Our STEM Career Book series introduces the world of STEM through storytelling, to inspire and encourage children from all backgrounds to talk about roles in STEM and consider them as potential careers.

    The next book in the series will focus on cyber security . We are looking for an author to write a chapter book aimed at children aged 9 to 12 on this theme. Previous books in the series include Lucy Green Robotics Queen and Storm Trackers (see

    About you

    We are looking for authors (budding, emerging or established) with stories to tell. You should have an interest in STEM and an ability to tell a fun, engaging and adventurous story with a relatable character that a child will enjoy while also learning about an exciting role in STEM.

    To help promote the book, we are looking for an author who would be willing to take part in interviews, attend the book launch or other appropriate events, be active on social media, etc. These can be discussed and agreed upon.

    About the project

    • The final project will follow these guidelines:
    • A relatable child protagonist that introduces the reader to a particular role in STEM. For this book, the role is cyber security. You do not need to be an expert on cyber security as you will be supported by a subject matter expert but you should be prepared to do research and write intelligently about it.
    • No more than 15,000 words
    • Number of pages: / Dimension: 198 x 127 mm
    • Aimed at age 9 to 12, so the protagonist(s) should be aged 12 minimum
    • We want to reach a wide readership, so be as inclusive as possible in your cast of characters

    • A one page (maximum) author biography, including any social media links.
    • A pitch that catches our attention – 2-3 sentences max.
    • A synopsis - tell us your storyline, crucial parts in the story and the ending. Don't forget to think about how the story promotes an interest in cyber security as a potential career.
    • A sample chapter, no more than 1000 words.

    Please send in separate Word documents and NOT in the body of the email to with the subject "STEM author" for your email. Please also include a fee proposal for your work. As we are a small charity, there will be no royalty payments from book sales as all profits go back into the charity to further our work.

    Deadline to apply: 10 May 2024

    Interviews with short-listed authors will take place the week of 20th May 2024.

    We are looking for the full text to be completed by August/September so that the publication of the book can take place in December of this year.
