To help drive our environmental protection, climate change & sustainability goals, the SDA are seeking experienced and motivated Environmental Officers to contribute to our Central Environmental Management Team (CEMT) and our newly formed Environmental Centre of Excellence (ECOE).

You will work with the CEMT and ECOE to promote environmental culture to project teams, oversee environmental challenges unique to this industry and provide support to the Royal Navy.


As Environmental Officer with the SDA, you will support end-to-end lifecycle and extensive environmental activities and products associated with nuclear submarines, ensuring a positive culture is maintained with clear focus on environmental protection.

You will support environmental infrastructure, helping to ensure our environmental impacts and risks meet our stringent compliance obligations and are appropriately managed.

You will need to be ethical, engaged and motivated to support the SDA with these objectives and to help us deliver environmentally sound submarines to the Royal Navy, whilst minimising our effects on climate change and the world around us.

Due to the nature of this work, working with teams is key to our success. You will therefore be required to uphold strong and productive relationships with SDA teams and our contractors. You will be inducted into a hybrid working environment and occasional travel between sites may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Producing corporate policies and processes to conform to the ISO 14001 standard and fulfil Defence obligations.
  • Helping project teams to procure and deliver environmentally sound and sustainable products, services and activities
  • Assurance of environmental compliance including supporting the conduct of central audits.
  • Advising on environment Compliance Statements and undertaking technical reviews of project environmental assessments.
  • Management of environmental metrics and organisational risks and opportunities.
  • Support the operation of various environmental and sustainability working groups and project meetings.
  • Providing a compliance position on behalf of the organisation in environmental maritime topic areas applicable to the SDA.
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders (including Navy Command).
  • Providing appropriate technical environmental advice to Projects as and when required.
  • Support the implementation of environmental improvement culture initiatives.

Person specification

  • Experience in the use of ASEMS and use of Environmental Management Tools & Processes
  • Level 4 NQF in a relevant engineering or science discipline
  • Experience of providing technical advice and delivery of environmental products or services
