    Applications are invited for Senior AICU Fellow post with a specialist interest

    Severe Respiratory Failure (SRF) and ECMO

    We are looking for experienced intensive care doctors (ST5 level and above) to work as Senior Adult Intensive Care Medicine Fellows with a specialist interest in Severe Respiratory Failure (SRF) and ECMO.

    You will work as an integral member of the adult intensive care team at Glenfield Hospital. This is a unique opportunity to work in the UK's largest and most experienced centre for adult ECMO.

    The successful applicant will be able to develop experience in severe acute respiratory failure and the provision of ECMO, they are also expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit / research activity at Glenfield Hospital.

    ***This post commences in August 2024 for a fixed term of 12 months.

    Main duties of the job

    You will become a key member of a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team providing adult intensive care services and gaining valuable experience in the following key areas:

  • Air and Road Transport of patients with Severe Respiratory Failure including mobile ECMO.
  • Initiation and ongoing management of patients on veno-venous and veno-arterial ECMO o Management of surgical and medical Cardiothoracic intensive care patients - elective and emergency
  • Trans-thoracic and trans-oesophageal echocardiography, lung ultrasound.
  • Advanced ventilatory techniques - including prone positioning, the use of nitric oxide, APRV and selective lung ventilation.
  • The use of a variety of vasoactive drugs, pulmonary artery catheter and intra-aortic balloon pump for cardiac output monitoring and mechanical circulatory support.
  • Competence in key practical skills including percutaneous tracheostomy, ECMO cannulation and decannulation, bronchoscopy, intercostal drain insertion and central venous and pulmonary artery catheter insertion for drug delivery, renal support and invasive haemodynamic monitoring.
  • Opportunity and support for national presentations of audit / data / research. Successful applicants will be given the opportunity to attend the ECMO Specialist Training Course and Intra-operative Trans-oesophageal Echo Course.

    Job responsibilities

    This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and ambitious individual to further develop key critical care medicine skills in the provision of advanced respiratory care including ECMO and transport of the critically ill adult and work in a leading cardio-thoracic intensive care unit.

    Time will be allocated for nonclinical duties to allow the successful applicant to take part in additional activities.

    The unit is recognised for advanced Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) training and this post is suitable for ICM trainees from all disciplines, in particular those on a recognised training programme wishing to pursue a special skills year (SSY) in ECMO during Stage 2 ICM training. Posts are also suitable for single or dual/triple specialty ICM trainees (Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine Acute Internal Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Renal Medicine) wishing to pursue an Out of Programme Activity (OOPT or OOPE). We would welcome applications from international medical graduates with the aforementioned training backgrounds.

  • Full GMC registration or IELTS score greater than 7.5
  • Completion of stage 1 ICM training or overseas equivalent (at least 12 months)
  • ALS

  • Completion of stage 2 and/or 3 ICM training or international equivalent

  • Prior experience in transfer of the critically ill, completion of a transfer training course
  • Prior experience in cardiothoracic intensive care and / or caring for ECMO/SARF patients
