The role

Reporting to the Head of Accounting, the Group Technical Accounting Specialist is responsible for ensuring that the Group follows best practice in IFRS, and stays abreast of developments in this field.


The Group Technical Accounting Specialist plays a vital role in managing the risks and opportunities inherent in complex and dynamic accounting rules.

He/she devises practical ways for the Group to comply with these rules and proactively identifies opportunities to improve and simplify working practices in this area.

This permanent role is based upon 37.5hrs/week between Monday and Friday.

Following a successful training and induction period it will operate on a hybrid basis, to likely include 3 days per week based at our central offices in Letchworth, plus occasional travel to other UK ETEL locations.


Key accountabilities

  • Support the budgeting and forecasting process of the Group.
  • Manage regular Impairment Testing under IAS 3
  • Act as key accounting adviser to the Group during the annual external auditing and statutory accounts process.
  • Identify ways to streamline, simplify or otherwise optimise accounting policies throughout the Group, and more generally contribute towards a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Maintain excellent level of technical accounting expertise, with a particular focus on developments in International Financial Reporting Standards.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and advisers.
  • Provide inhouse training on accounting matters to other members of the Finance team.
  • Perform reviews of Balance Sheet reconciliations.
  • Support development of business case requests for additional resources and funding
  • Support in the recruitment, induction and training of team members.
  • Attend and contribute to management/department meetings where required
  • Any other ad hoc work required by the Head of Accounting

Skills & experience

  • Deep understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards, including, but not limited to IFRS 16, IFRS 9 and the 2021 IFRIC on Software as a Service
  • Experience of Finance systems
  • Advanced Excel user
  • Capacity to maintain exceptional attention to detail whilst managing large sets of data and working to tight deadlines
  • Confident and influential communicator, with the ability to and build positive relationships at all levels
  • The ability to demonstrate resilience and build trust
  • Sense of responsibility, integrity and leading by example
  • ACA/ACCA Qualification or equivalent
  • Full Cat B UK drivers license desirable
