    Job Introduction

We are looking for a journalist to help develop social media and digital video content for the BBC in the North East and Cumbria.

Our social media platforms are vital in helping us to reach and interact with people who don't get their local news from broadcast media.

We know our social media and digital video strategy is working, and we're looking for someone to continue to create even more engaging content that people expect on social media, and as digital video on the BBC website.

We are looking for someone with a flair for digital storytelling who is able to come up with a constant supply of original stories, shoot and edit them for the news website and for our social media platforms.

The content you produce will go on our North East & Cumbria news and social platforms – Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – with the scope to be picked up by the BBC news and BBC's social platforms and potentially reach a large national and international audience.

We also work closely with our colleagues in TV and radio and the stories you find will be told in their output too.

Social listening is a key part of this job too and we are looking for someone who is completely comfortable in using those tools to find stories which will appeal to our audiences and reach new ones.

    Main Responsibilities

As a Journalist, your responsibilities will include:
To film and edit engaging video content for all our digital platforms – the news website and social media

To be able to come up with a constant stream of original stories

To have a thorough understanding of different social media platforms and reversion content which works best for each

You'll work closely with the wider social media team in the North East and Cumbria so it's important you're a team player with clear ideas of ways we can improve what we do.

You'll understand how to post on social platforms – and you'll be confident knowing what to post and when.

You'll also understand the importance of engagement and how platform-tailored storytelling techniques, such as Reels or Stories, can help us reach and build local audiences on social media.

Having a good understanding of our existing audience across the North East & Cumbria and how to reach new audiences

Being able to work to tight deadlines to turn around content

Travelling to stories across the patch to gather content

You'll be using social listening tools to find the issues that matter most to local audiences and have the creative vision needed to turn them into content audiences love to read, watch and share

You'll know how to turn daily radio and TV content into engaging social formats and you'll be just as happy creating original digital content using your own skills and experience

    Are you the right candidate?

    As the successful candidate:
You will be a confident digital storyteller with the ability to film and edit content which works well across different digital platforms

You will be completely at ease with social media with a thorough understanding of what works well on different platforms

You will use social listening on a daily basis to see which stories are engaging our audience

Confident using audience analytics to shape our content and assess its impact

You are a creative storyteller with the ability to come up with different ways of telling stories

The ability to come up with a constant stream of original stories

Knowledge of editing in FCPX is preferable but training can be provided

A good team player who enjoys working with colleagues to help produce content of a constantly high standard

A commitment to producing content which is diverse

You must also have a sound understanding of the editorial problems and legal concerns that you may face in this role

You should have a thorough understanding of the social media market at a local level

    About the BBC

We don't focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you've read about our values and behaviours in the document attached below.

We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles.
