Crewe Programme is a large programme of works, valued at £1.5bn, being delivered by Network Rail to facilitate HS2 and at the same time transform the station area with required asset renewal, increasing capacity and ultimately improving performance and resilience.

Crewe Programme is being delivered as part of the wider Central Rail Systems Alliance (CRSA) which is formed by partners Network Rail, Balfour Beatty, Atkins and TSO.

The CRSA is responsible for the delivery of multi-disciplinary railway upgrade projects on the Northwest & Central and Eastern regions of Network Rail.


We are currently looking for a Head of Design Crewe Programme to join our dynamic and innovative business to manage and grow our involvement in Crewe Programme.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Design Leadership across a large portfolio/programme of works.
  • Develop strong client and stakeholder relationships.
  • Manage and Coordinate Design Development and Delivery across various organisation, accountable for its outcome and realisation of associated benefits.
  • Responsible for the delivery of projects to stretch cost and programme targets.
  • Commission and chair reviews during the programme that formally assess the programme's continued alignment with its objectives, capability of delivery and measurable achievement of benefits.
  • Portfolio income and cost forecast.
  • Ensure suitably competent teams are available for the management, supervision and execution of projects and ensure adequate resources are maintained to achieve the objectives of the projects within set budgetary limits.
  • Establish and monitor health and safety, environmental responsibilities to ensure compliance with legislation, corporate procedures and objectives.
  • Encourage employee development and growth, proven ability to manage an organisation in the Rail sector.
  • Innovate service offering to harvest new revenue streams in order to maximise returns.
  • Resource management.

Personal Qualities and Experience:


  • Experience in the delivery of Railway Design projects throughout the NR project lifecycle at Project Director or Engineering Manager level.
  • Membership of a professional institution related to competence, Project Management / Engineering.
  • Fully conversant in requirements under CDM and other H&S legislation.
  • Proficient in exercising the duties under CDM (Designer).
  • Management experience in driving performance and productivity.
  • Strong customer focus with a service delivery mindset.
  • Sound commercial experience and demonstrable capability in delivering positive results.
  • Familiarity of Lean principles.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong safety management culture.
  • Selfaware and adaptable style to meet varying framework needs.
  • Resilient.
