P Specialist Sensory Teaching Assistant (Hearing Impairment) full time 37 hours TTO. Grade G + SSA.


An opportunity has arisen within the Low Incidence Needs Team (LINT), Gateshead Council, for a Specialist Sensory Teaching Assistant to work within the area of Deafness/Hearing Impairment.

The LINT works across the age range within both mainstream and special school settings. The successful applicant will be expected to work flexibly where required across Gateshead.

You will meet the Higher-Level Teaching Assistants Standards or, have an equivalent qualification. The successful applicant will be required to achieve BSL Level 3 within 3 years.


You will have knowledge of the impact of Deafness/hearing loss upon learning and development, a good understanding of child development and learning processes and barriers to learning.

Working knowledge of national /early years curriculum, programmes and strategies is also essential.


Experience of working with Deaf/hearing impaired children and young people is preferable along with use of specialist resources and technologies relevant to the post.

Experience of using British Sign Language alongside speech to facilitate communication is essential.
