Your new role


National Highways have an exciting opportunity for an Inspector to join our team in Operations, based in the North West region.

The Inspector will complete inspections of non-complex structures assets, in line with agreed inspections schedules, procedures and standards, raise appropriate works and undertake checks on the quality and quantity of maintenance work.

Collect data to inform prioritization and development of maintenance schemes. The role will also have on call duty responsibilities.

What you'll be leading on

  • To deliver cyclical and adhoc inspections of noncomplex highway structures assets, identify defects, defect causes and options for remedial actions, in line with agreed timescales, procedures and standards.
  • To document asset condition and all inspection findings, including special inspections and testing, in relevant systems in line with agreed data capture and management standards, guidance and industry best practice; ensure asset data is up to date and correct at all times.
  • To input into the development of inspections programme and to provide support to Senior Inspectors and Inspection Manager in the associated detailed planning activities (e.g. arranging road space, creating orders for suppliers, producing specifications for the procurement of monitoring, investigation, testing and other special inspections of structures).
  • To liaise with engineering teams and support the development of maintenance and investment plans and prioritisation by ensuring adequate information is gathered.
  • To complete reports, technical drawings and studies to support inspection findings and asset condition information management.
  • To report and raise works for any safety critical issues and proactively manage high priority defects.
  • To be available for on duty responsibilities, attending incident sites and providing advice.
  • To carry out timely inspections of reactive asset repairs, and escalate any cause for concern such as works delays and/or reoccurring quality issues.
  • Provide input to network performance reviews to understand performance trends, identify risks, analyse root causes for performance issues and help suggest remedial action plans.
  • To support liaison activities with key stakeholders (e.g. Local Authorities, Network Rail, Canal & River Trust and land owners) and to provide, as required, information to support customer queries, claims and correspondence.
  • To continuously identify opportunities for efficiencies, working closely with internal and external stakeholders to implement ideas.
  • To ensure the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.
  • To carry out such other duties which are consistent with the nature and responsibilities of this role.

To be successful

  • Qualified to or working towards HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or Equivalent, with experience of undertaking inspections
  • Qualified to or working towards Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (BICS) with d emonstrable evidence of the core competencies required
  • Understanding of network management practice and approach
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the defects and maintenance needs of highways structures assets
  • Experience of site supervision
  • Good understanding of the CDM Regulations appropriate to highway maintenance works
  • Extensive experience of undertaking inspections
