The Role


Cryptoassets and associated activities are due to be phased into the FCA's perimeter and we need to innovate and adapt our regulatory framework to deal with new and evolving opportunities and challenges this poses.

We are looking for talented, motivated and outcome focused individuals with varied experience and backgrounds to join our diverse and inclusive Crypto Policy team.


The Crypto Policy team sits in the Payments and Digital Assets Dept and plays a critical role in leading the FCA's policy work on cryptoassets.

This sector has become hugely important and continues to grow at great pace.

It is innovative, creating opportunities for consumers and regulated participants but also new risks that we must stay ahead of.

Our work includes the development, consultation and implementation of crypto policy for retail and cross cutting issues.

We work closely with multiple stakeholders including Wholesale Cryptoassets Policy, Supervision and our International Dept given the global nature of crypto.


Our actions are driven by the Cryptoasset Taskforce created by HMT in 2018 as well as market developments and our greatest challenge at present is to design a more comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto to help shape the future of this diverse, fast-paced and ever-changing sector.

What does the role involve? What are the key responsibilities?

The team's activities include:

  • Help create and communicate a vision for a long-term outcome for regulating cryptoassets and how this can be achieved in line with our Consumer Protection Objective
  • Exercise critical judgement to help shape policy development
  • Leading, coordinating and delivering crypto policy projects using knowledge, analysis and project management skills
  • Work with others across the FCA to harness expertise and knowledge from other departments, including those working in wholesale crypto policy as well as those in General Counsel Division, International, Supervision and Enforcement
  • Create and build relationships with a diverse range of external stakeholders in this field
  • Collaborate and engage effectively with key internal and other regulatory stakeholders, including international regulators, HM Treasury, PRA, Bank and our independent panels, to communicate FCA policy views, influence others and manage key relationships.
  • Providing training and advice and briefings about policy issues to FCA colleagues
  • Coaching, mentoring and supporting colleagues in technical knowledge and interactions with firms/other stakeholders.
  • Role modelling the FCA's Values and Core Capabilities.

As part of this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the cryptoasset sector and how it functions
  • Help develop our thinking and make proposals for how the sector should be regulated
  • Get significant exposure to FCA and external stakeholders, working closely with market participants and other regulatory and government bodies
  • Gain exposure to FCA Senior Management, with periodic discussions at both Executive Committees and the FCA Board

Skills/Experience Required

Minimum Knowledge and or experience of the cryptoassets sector applied in either a personal or professional capacityEssential- Understanding of what makes markets work well for consumers and the impact of regulation on consumers, including unintended outcomes- Strong communication skills and personal impact- Experience of engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders- A collaborative and flexible approach, with the ability to think strategically about future regulatory approaches and join up with wider FCA or Government policy initiatives- Comfortable with responsibility and managing ambiguity

Desirable- Deep technical knowledge of cryptoasset sector- Knowledge of consumer lending/borrowing and P2P business models- Knowledge of payments / e-money business models- Knowledge of trading firms and consumer investing behaviour- Understanding of FCA governance and the end-to-end policy-making process


Useful Information- This role is graded as Technical Specialist - Regulatory- The FCA has a national role and is committed to a national footprint.

This role can be based in London, Leeds or Edinburgh.- The FCA has London and National Pay ranges to reflect regional differences.


The salary for this role will be:
