    Description

    We are seeking an exceptional candidate with an accountancy qualification or finalist who has a keen eye for detail, an analytical mind with management accounting and a genuine desire to work in a vibrant education setting. The candidate will be working with key members of the SLT on a daily basis and occasionally presenting to governors.

    As the complexity and volume of bursary work increases and takes on an even more all-year nature, the structure of the Bursary needs to evolve. Operating a £5m budget the post is required to work throughout the calendar and academic year to support the school's delivery of education.

    The school has significant responsibilities to the Cathedral, Charity Commission and a yearly statutory audit. The post will report to the Bursar and will also have a significant input to termly governor Finance meetings.

    Job Description

    Job Purpose

    • Responsible to the Bursar for the whole of the School's day-to-day accounting function to ensure effective procedures and robust controls are in place for all aspects of the function.

    The role broadly falls into 4 areas:

    Finance

    • Support the Bursar's financial and audit responsibility.
    • Prepare monthly management accounts.
      • Check Income & Expenditure (I&E) variances and explain.
      • Compare to previous year, to budget and to forecast.
      • Prepare weekly cashflow forecast.
      • Create graphical chart to show I&E and other key performance indicators.
      • Monitor and report cost centre income and expenditure wrt budget.
    • Compile and analyse the annual school budget, setting and monitoring.
    • Prepare school travel and trip cards.
      • Assist trip leaders in accounting for trip costs.
    • Prepare initial input data for new arrivals, departing staff, music teachers and additional overtime payments.
    • Reconcile monthly Teacher Pension Scheme payments.
    • Administer school fee collection.
      • Process invoices for parents and the Cathedral.
      • Initiative a chase mechanism. Report to Bursar and Head.
    • Administer school finance transactions (purchases and receipts).
      • Process supplier payments and invoice, expense control.
    • Maintain a close dialogue wit the Cathedral Financial Controller.
      • Reconcile inter-company account monthly.
    • Modernise the finance IT package and update the finance manual.
    • Monitor and advise on school investments with the CCLA.
    • Analyse school remissions.

    Audit

    • Prepare and host the school's audit in keeping with SORP.
    • Liaise with the auditors and implement audit findings.
    • Advise on changes to financial regulations.

    Commercial

    • Assist the Bursar to seek commercial income opportunities and advise on all hirings of the school site.

    Deputising

    • Deputise for the Bursar in all finance matters and at governor committees, or at SLT when requested by the Head.

    Person Specification

    This post would suit a candidate from a variety of backgrounds. Essential skills and qualifications:

    • Qualified accountant or 'finalist' (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA).
    • Good knowledge of charity SORP accounting.
    • Experience of developing and implementing financial systems and internal controls.
    • Experience of budgeting and management accounts.
    • Some experience of annual audits and of preparing annual accounts.
    • Good analytical skills, advanced Excel and strong IT skills.
    • Familiarity with a recognised finance software package.
    • Experience in a school would be beneficial.
    • Commercial and contract experience.
    • Experience of Payroll.

    Ideally the candidate will be degree-level (or equivalent) educated, with evidence of continuous learning. The school will offer professional development through its membership of professional school bodies.

    Terms and Conditions

    This post is being advertised as a 5 days per week, all year (52 weeks) with a generous 30 days of holiday (plus bank holidays) period. It will be 37.5 hours per week.

    The salary will be dependent on experience, in the range £47,000 to £50,000.
