    Job Title: Senior Water Quality Process Scientist
    Location: Otterbourne (This role will require travel around your allocated area and therefore it is essential you have a driving licence and access to a vehicle)

    Perm/FTC: Fixed term/ secondment till May 2025
    Salary: Up to £41,000 per annum

    Southern Water has an exciting development opportunity as a Senior Water Quality Process Scientist, working in our Otterbourne based Water Supply Team.

    As a Senior Process Scientist, you will be responsible for monitoring and optimising drinking water quality from source to tap to ensure we meet our customer promise of a constant, high-quality supply.

    This role is based at Otterbourne Water Supply Works, in Hampshire, and responsible primarily for Water Supplies in Hampshire and supporting other areas where required.

    Some of your key accountabilities will include:

  • Ensure that all relevant UK and EC legislation is adhered to, in particular that relating to drinking water quality
  • Monitoring and analysis of telemetry and laboratory data
  • Planning sampling programmes for wide ranging parameters from source to customer tap in order to monitor water quality and ensure treatment processes are performing to the required standard
  • Routine process audits on the Water Supply Works in your area of responsibility (in this case Hampshire)
  • Working closely with field operations staff regarding operation and optimisation of treatment processes to ensure compliance with Regulations is maintained for best value
  • Undertake water quality risk assessments to ensure risks to quality and production are mitigated, including advising on service recovery during water quality events.
  • Undertake detailed investigations into the root cause of water quality compliance failures and incidents and produce reports with recommendations for remedial actions and continuous improvement based on best practice
  • Provide input to planned and reactive reporting to the Drinking Water Inspectorate
  • Participating in a standby roster on a minimum 1/12 day basis
  • The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following transferrable skills:

  • Collecting and analysing data to investigate scientific issues and draw out conclusions and recommendations.
  • Excellent IT skills including data analysis in excel.
  • Good mathematical fluency
  • Analytical thinking
  • Self-motivated, assertive, and independent thought whilst being a good team worker too.
  • The following experience will be advantageous:

  • Good understanding of water chemistry/ biology and the principles of water treatment
  • A sound understanding of chemistry and/ or microbiology, health significance of water quality parameters
  • Knowledge of the regulatory principles and framework governing the UK water supply industry
  • Graduate in science or engineering or equivalent business career.
  • This role is both challenging and rewarding. You will be a part of a high performing technical function, working at a fast pace, conducting desktop analysis/reviews along with site visits to ensure industry and internal best practice, and water quality compliance. This is a key role to ensure that Southern Water maintains the high standards set out by our regulators.
