Job summary:


The Nuclear Safety Case Lead role is an exciting opportunity for you to play a key role in shaping the future of Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde as it undergoes significant investment in preparation for the future nuclear submarine and weapons programmes.


Within the Design Authority, this role is responsible for the Nuclear Periodic Safety Review Programme and for the production and approval of Nuclear Safety Cases for Radioactive Waste Handling Facilities.

Job description:

As a Design Authority Safety Case lead you will be responsible for:

  • Acting as the Intellignet Customer for Contractor delivery of the Periodic Safety Review Programme.
  • Acting as the Intelligent Customer for Contractor delivery of the Safety Case for De-Commissioning activities, including the Laid Up Subarmines at Rosyth.
  • Acting as the Intelligent Customer for Contractor delivery of the Safety Case for Radioactive Waste handling activities at HMNB Clyde
  • Leading a small team of Safety Case Engineers.
To achieve this, we will offer significant opportunities to develop your knowledge of nuclear activities and designs through both formal training and on-site familiarisation


Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde (HMNB Clyde) is home to the United Kingdom's Strategic Nuclear Deterrent, Astute Class Attack Submarines, Sandown Class Mine Hunter Vessels and 43 Cdo Royal Marines.

It is an operational support and maintenance base, within the Navy Command TLB and comprises both Faslane and Coulport sites.

HMNB Clyde's primary purpose is to provide engineering and logístical support to the Royal Navy in maintaining Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD).

This is achieved by ensuring at least one Vanguard Class submarine is on patrol at sea every day of the year.


RNAD Coulport is responsible for the storage, processing, maintenance and issue of the Trident Weapon System and the ammunitioning of all submarine-embarked tactical weapons.


Person specification:


Skills and Experience:

  • Safety Case delivery, for example Hazard Analysis, demonstration of ALARP, and ensuring the validity of claims, arguments and evidence.
  • Periodic Safety Review delivery
  • Presenting to Safety Committees, such as an Authorisee's/Licensee's Nuclear Safety Committee (NSC)
  • A track record of making intelligent evidence based decisions using various sources of data
  • Minimum of Level 6 / SCQF Level 10 qualification (e.g. BSc, BEng) (or equivalent qualification / experience)
