    This is a hybrid role that will require weekly on-site work in Birmingham

    Your role as the Engineering Manager is to manage the running of the SRE Team within the Secure Development Unit. Managing the support team, business process oversight management and being responsible for the security, system reliability, availability and service performance of a significant number of security related applications.

    We are an SRE team responsible for implementing, running and supporting a diverse range of security related tools which support the management of our core IT infrastructure. This includes tools which manage network and IT security, Physical Security and compliance, automated software delivery and software discovery; as well as several other IT estate management functions.

    This is built on an ethos of continuous improvement; empowering the whole team to be actively engaged in improving our processes and our performance and driving SRE principles into all our Production system support.

    What you'll be doing – your accountabilities

    • Coordinates teams through the implementation of new software development life cycle automation tools, frameworks, and code pipelines (continuous integration/continuous delivery pipelines), ensures teams follow best practices with a focus on the re-use of application code, and demonstrates consistent software delivery practices and produces continuous integration/continuous delivery platform solutions.
    • Collaborates with engineering and build team leadership in supporting the development of the architectures and practices that should be adopted in order to deliver on engineering and operational goals.
    • Provides technical support to product teams to optimise availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response, and capacity planning.
    • Solves problems relating to mission-critical services and builds automation to prevent problem recurrence with the goal of automated response to all non-exceptional service conditions.
    • Executes new builds of infrastructure tooling that improves reliability across the entire product surface area, dealing with massive distributed scale.
    • Coordinates the work with development teams during design phase, to build and perform infrastructure upgrades to support applications availability and reliability.
    • Manages the current-state solution portfolio to identify deficiencies through aging of the technologies used by the application, or misalignment with business requirements.
    • Leads a team in the implementation of approaches that scale systems sustainably through mechanisms like automation and evolves systems by pushing for changes that improve reliability and velocity.
    • Oversees the delivery of infrastructure as code software to improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of services.
    • Oversees the implementation of robust monitoring and alerting systems.
    • Manages the queue and support processing to ensure early warning of support issues.
    • Owns and leads retrospective and preventive actions after each high severity production incident.
    • Champions, continuously develops and shares with team knowledge on emerging trends and changes in site reliability engineering best practices and industry standards.
    • Coaches talent, and manages others, to develop capabilities and ensure performance through upskilling, development and recruitment.
    • Implement ways to improve working processes within the area of site reliability engineering responsibility.

    Mandatory:

    • Experience in Managing Engineering teams including support functions
    • Broad technical experience across a range of IT infrastructure disciplines (e.g. networks, datacentre infrastructure, operating systems etc)
    • Experience of Continuous Improvement
    • Strong experience of communicating complex detail to technical and non-technical audiences
