We have an exciting opportunity working as Head of Policy & Communications here at City & Guilds You will be required to lead a collaborative team committed to demonstrating the value of skills to society through insight led policy and communications.

You will craft engaging and impactful policy and communication campaigns that deliver to our public affairs ambitions and our mission to be the go to route and brand for skills.


With a keen eye on opportunities in the wider policy and regulatory environment, together with an ear to the ground on what our markets are looking for, you will be able to bring together a broad range of insight and intelligence to maximise our role as a leader in skills development.

This appointment will be made on merit.


About the role:


As Head of Policy & Communications, you will design and execute ambitious policy and communications strategy and campaigns tailored to specific audiences establishing engagement with key stakeholders.

You will provide strategic direction for the team to help define a long-term vision and execution of business plans.

Working closely across teams in the directorate and across City & Guilds, you will have particularly strong lings to marketing, sales and brand and communications teams to lead the development of specific policy change initiatives to be implemented.

You will be expected to brief and counsel on complex policy and public affairs issues to ELT/Senior Leaders.


You will strive for high standards in planning and executing of policy and communications activity taking a leadership approach, with high degrees of responsibility attached to the work undertaken.


Ultimately, you will contribute to our ability to scale our impact as the go to brand and route for skills.


You will need to be based in the UK working on a hybrid basis with a mix of home and office.


About you:

You should have a minimum of 3 years leadership and team management experience.

You will have extensive experience in policy development and design/delivery of impactful policy orientated communications campaigns showing evidence of adoption of policy change.


You will have a proven track record of campaigning on complex issues, working with a diverse range of stakeholders, including government, parliamentarians, regulators, and the media.


Experience in delivering policy partnerships and producing research outputs for different audiences will be crucial in engaging multiple stakeholders in our work.


You will understand the funding landscape and opportunities for charities to appeal to a wide range of funders and policy agendas.

Experience of working with or in a political environment would be an advantage as would experience of leading policy change through impactful communications and insight.


As Head of Policy & Communications, you will have experience of combining policy and communications skills to support public affairs and brand building activities.

You will have excellent analytical and written skills coupled with comprehensive knowledge of fundraising practices.


An exceptional communicator, with clear and concise written and oral skills, you will have the ability to develop materials for key spokespeople including speech writing for key stakeholders.

You should be politically astute and experienced with dealing with queries from journalists, senior officials, and wider stakeholders.
