    Due to service innovation and trust investment we have created a new exciting role as a Principal Pharmacist - Medicines Optimisation and High Cost Drug Commissioning to better enhance service delivery, working across our Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals.

    You will be key in providing cross-site senior leadership and delivery of the high cost drugs and biologics agenda, ensuring high quality and cost effective medicines are introduced as part of the medicines optimisation strategy. You will also lead on the trust medicines formulary, maintaining close links with NHS England and ICB.

    As a new member of the senior team, you will have the opportunity to use your wider skills and clinical expertise to model this new job role in accordance with the departmental vision.

    You will be supported in your new role by the senior pharmacy leadership team. Further professional learning and development opportunities are available including leadership courses provided by the trust.

    ESNEFT is about to embark on a full site wide implementation of the EPIC electronic patient record which includes electronic prescribing and administration as well as pharmacy stock control system.

    In addition to our fully automated dispensaries, we host one of the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service medicines advice sites and the Regional Pharmacy Manufacturing Unit (including a brand new Aseptic facility).

    Main duties of the job

  • To work with the cross site Senior Pharmacists for the Biologics and High Cost Drugs to lead, deliver and evaluate the use of high-cost medicines used in commissioning.
  • Engage with clinical teams to ensure appropriate use of PbR-excluded drugs ensuring that they are used in line with commissioning policies, monitoring and data collection requirements.
  • To implement and manage switching of biosimilars and other high cost medicines in accordance to commissioning criteria, in conjunction with the pharmacy and specialist teams ensuring safe, efficient, and comprehensive service.
  • To report the NICE Technology Appraisal (TA) or Highly Specialised Technologies Evaluation (HST) implementation plan, related to medicines only, to ESNEFT MGG to provide organisational assurance of compliance.
  • To support the Finance Team in the completion and resolution of high cost drug challenges raised by NHSE and ICB in a timely manner and assurance of completion of Blueteq.
  • To review and monitor adherence to the medicines formulary and prioritise cost-effective drugs.
  • To take the lead for formulary management and review for ESNEFT, working with ICB and other providers to ensure the joint health economy wide formulary is regularly reviewed and updated and new formulary decisions are effectively disseminated and communicated to service leads and clinical directors across care groups and the wider local health economy

  • Extensive hospital pharmacy experience
  • Variety of Clinical Pharmacy Experience
  • Experience of working through change in the workplace and of the impact of change.
  • Leading and managing other staff
  • Experience of writing guidelines and procedures
  • Experience of writing new medicine business cases
  • Experience of tutoring and mentoring other staff
  • Experience of audit
  • Experience of critical appraisal
  • Desirable criteria

  • Project management and audit experience
  • Experience of working with Blueteq
  • Qualifications

    Essential criteria

  • Vocational master's degree in Pharmacy or equivalent + examined pre-registration/Foundation training
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Evidence of and commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice or equivalent
  • Desirable criteria

  • Independent prescriber status
