Background


The Northern Ireland Office represents Northern Ireland interests at a UK Government level and UK Government interests in Northern Ireland.


We have a wide range of responsibilities, including:

underpinning political stability in Northern Ireland; overseeing the Northern Ireland devolution settlement; leading on national security policy in Northern Ireland; addressing the legacy of Northern Ireland's past; delivering elections and constitutional reform in Northern Ireland; playing a key role in rebalancing the NI economy; representing NI interests, including on the border with Ireland,following the exit from the EU.

ABOUT THE ROLE:


As the Head of Visits and Ministerial Engagement you will work closely with the Northern Ireland Ministerial Team and Special Advisors in planning and delivering the department's engagement programme in Northern Ireland.

This programme will reflect the strategic objectives of the Northern Ireland Office and the broader UK Government's goals for the sustainability and success of Northern Ireland.

You will also need to work closely with policy teams across the department to set the strategic direction of the Ministerial teams ongoing engagement programme including linking in with the Communication Team on the wider comms messaging around activity.

In addition it will be essential to maintain a strong network across the range of stakeholders the NIO works with in order to achieve the optimum outcome for Ministers.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The main responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Working across the department to set the strategic direction of ministerial engagement.
  • Responsibility for overall planning and delivery of a programme of external ministerial engagements, which supports the NIO's business priorities. Including managing the team of four visits staff.
  • Developing and maintaining a network of senior stakeholders to deliver External Relations Group's remit, including our support for Ministerial/VVIP visits.
  • Working closely with Comms colleagues to ensure that the media plans for Ministers and the engagement approach are complementary and support the broader comms strategy and departmental priorities. This will include working alongside the Head of News leading up to and throughout the delivery of visits in order to help deliver positive and engaging content to maximise the impact of visits and engagement.
  • Design and delivery of programmes for highprofile UKG visits, which support NIO objectives and enhance the UK Government's profile in NI.
  • Cross-Whitehall coordination and liaison on NIrelated visits, events and other matters including representing the NIO on the Cross-Whitehall visits group. Maintaining a strong Whitehall network of contact to ensure that the NIO is implementing government best practice for engagement.
  • Providing resilience and flexible support for wider demands which may arise in External Relations, and across the Department.


This post involves extensive travel within Northern Ireland including attending visits as well as occasional travel between Belfast and London will be required.


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:


  • Proven ability to develop and maintain networks with senior stakeholders across a range of sectors to deliver business objectives.
