Design Manager - £30,000 to £38,000 per year depending on experience + Benefits - Saffron Walden, Essex

The Role


Do you have an eye for detail, an innovative approach to design, and an eagerness to take on projects? Labcraft is looking for a Lighting Designer to join our Technical/Design Department and help us lead the industry through innovation.


The successful applicant will report directly to the Technical Director and be responsible for generating design specifications, planning, product design and executing projects.

You must be able to manage projects from concept to completion, utilising otherdepartments, suppliers, and sub-contractors as needed.

You will also be required to complete a design validation process for all new products and organise any required compliance testing.


Key Responsibilities:

The key responsibilities of a Design Manager include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilise Solidworks CAD system.
  • Generate and work to approved design specifications.
  • Produce conceptual designs and costing data.
  • Produce prototypes.
  • Liaise with external suppliers for outofhouse engineering.
  • Produce tooling files, procurement spec drawings, and obtain quotations from suppliers.
  • Manage testing regimes electrical and mechanical.
  • Develop and test assembly/construction methods.
  • Modify existing product designs to meet customer requirements.
  • Analyse competitor products.
  • Collating information for and producing CE / UKCA technical files.

The Person
The key skills and qualities of a Design Manager are:

  • Competent using SolidWorks CAD software for 3D modelling and surfacing.
  • Previous experience in product or lighting design.
  • HNC/HND/Degree qualification in engineering or product design.
  • Proven track record for managing your own projects.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing technologies and materials.
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of lens/optical design software an advantage
  • Knowledge of Relux or DIALux software an advantage.
  • Conscientious, thorough and observant with an eye for detail.
  • Responsible with a resultsdriven approach.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Team player.
  • Full clean driving license.
