Description

To work according to the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines to provide a high standard of patient care using a flexible patient centred care approach.


The Neonatal Outreach Sister will be expected to manage a team that provide a service for neonates discharged from NICU and Transitional Care at St Michaels Hospital, who reside in the appropriate post code boundaries.

S/he will be an expert in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a defined caseload of infants delivering appropriate direct care and offering care giving and health promotion advice to the parents and families.


To manage the Outreach team Senior Staff Nurses, ensuring they are up to date with essential training and yearly appraisals.

To promote an environment that is conducive to learning, supporting and participating in the supervision/teaching of new staff, students on placement and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Professional

  • To ensure that registration with the NMC of all staff members within the team is maintained.
  • To be aware of and adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for nurses, midwives and health visitors.
  • To cooperate with other healthcare professionals and to gain an understanding of their professional role and responsibilities.
  • To maintain his/her appearance and behaviour in accordance with the standards expected of a member of the nursing profession. To maintain effective control of the budget with support from the Matron
  • To provide professional leadership to the multidisciplinary team, actively participating in the support and the implementation of the Trust's Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.


The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Michael's Hospital is one of two Lead centres for neonatal services within Bristol.

This tertiary unit provides intensive care for the population of the South West Neonatal ODN.The Unit consists of 31 Cots, 15 Intensive, 8 High Dependency and 8 Special Care.

The unit supports 16 cots on the Transitional Care Ward. The unit provides care for very sick new-born infants with a wide variety of medical, surgical and cardiac conditions. St Michaels also hosts a transport team for the regions hospitals.

We are currently part of a review of services across Bristol with the potential of our numbers increasing by 8 ITU and 2 HDU cots.

The Neonatal Outreach Team is an intrinsic part of our Neonatal services here in UHBW NHS Trust. Due to a vacancy in the team we are able to recruit a band 6 nurse to the team. We are looking for experienced enthusiastic nurses to join our team of motivated nurses.

As a senior member of the Neonatal Outreach Team you will be expected to provide an expert level of professional practice within the team, to babies and their families after discharge from the Neonatal Unit.

You will be an expert in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a defined caseload of infants delivering appropriate direct care and health promotion advice to the parents/carers and their families.

You will also actively support the Neonatal Outreach Sister, assisting in the safe, effective and efficient management of the outreach team caseload and deputising in their absence.

Education

  • Take personal responsibility for your own professional development.
  • Promote professional / clinical development within the outreach team, participate in and coordinate the ward teaching programme.
  • Participate in teaching, supervision and mentorship of students and other staff.
  • Be familiar with UHB Trust policies and local practice guidelines and adhere to them at all times.
Management

  • Act as team leader for advice, expertise and support in the absence of senior nursing staff.
  • Demonstrate effective time management and leadership skills.
  • Whilst this role does not involve budgetary responsibility, contribution to management of effective resources with the Outreach sister/Matron will be required.
  • Work closely with Outreach sister to further develop managerial and leadership skills.
  • Ensure procedures are correctly followed in order to maintain documented standards of care.
  • Ensure all health and safety requirements are complied with and all accidents and incidents are reported to the Outreach sister/Matron. In the absence of senior nursing staff respond appropriately to all reported accident / incidents.
  • Active involvement in recruitment, retention and appraisal of staff.
  • Contribute actively to policy development and strategic business planning processes.
  • Demonstrate continuous responsibility for the management of the caseload as required
