    Teesside Adult Learning Disabilities Services have an exciting opportunity at Unit 2 Bankfields Court Respite Service in Middlesbrough for a Registered Staff Nurse to join our team. We are looking to recruit an experienced RNLD nurse although we will consider applications from nurses with a current NMC registration who are able to demonstrate experience in PMLD care.

    Unit 2 provides respite care to service users with profound and multiple learning disabilities, behaviours that challenge and Autism. The service runs 24 hours a day seven days a week, therefore nights and weekends are an expectation of the role. We also have sister services across the service line and there may be an expectation to provide cover where needed within our Stockton Respite Service, our Residential service in Thornaby and our Day services in Middlesbrough and Brotton.

    Main duties of the job

    As a registered nurse within respite services you will be responsible for the management of shifts on a daily basis in order to ensure care is delivered to an exceptional standard, you will support a dedicated team of health care assistants in meeting the needs of people accessing respite care.

    The role will involve supporting with personal care needs, administering medication, the assessment and monitoring of physical/mental health issues and liaising with other professionals around any concerns. The successful applicant will be an effective communicator and demonstrate passion, promoting quality of life and independence. Leadership, delegation and the use of own initiative are also essential aspects of the role. This is a challenging but very rewarding role in a well established team.

    At times it may be necessary to work across other areas within the Tees Adult Learning Disabilities locality.

    You will need excellent communication skills and be calm, confident and resilient in your approach. You will need to be able to form therapeutic relationships with people with learning disabilities and mental health needs.

    Job responsibilities

    This post is only open to those candidates who already have their NMC registration in place and have successfully completed the preceptorship programme. Please note: Newly qualified applicants or those due to qualify will be recruited via a separate process.

    Person Specification Qualifications

    • Current professional registration with Nursing & Midwifery Council RNMH or RNLD
    • To be recognised practice assessor / mentor or work towards in an agreed timescale
    • Trained Clinical Supervisor (within 6 month probationary period)
    • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

    Experience

    • Working with people with mental ill health / learning disabilities
    • Working in a person centred therapeutic organisation
    • Working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers
    • Working in a multi-disciplinary team
    • Working in partnership with other agencies

    Knowledge

    • Evidence based knowledge of best practice in caring for patients in learning disabilities
    • Understanding of relevant legislation (eg Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act)
    • Care Programme Approach and its application in practice
    • Clinical risk assessment and management and its application in practice

    Skills

    • Communicate complex and sensitive informaiton effectively to patients, carers/families
    • Work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
    • Co-ordinate and prioritise the activties of a team
    • Competency in ECG and venepunture
