What's in it for you:

We have two opportunities for degree apprentices in the Highway Improvements design team. One focussing on highway engineering projects and the other on Intelligent Transport Systems and traffic signal design.

These posts offer a debt free route to a university education whilst gaining considerable on the job experience, allowing you to achieve Incorporate Engineer accreditation with the Institute of Civil Engineers.

This is an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and energetic individuals to join the team designing and delivering highway improvement schemes from inception to completion of construction.

Maintaining a great county for people to live, work and visit, depends on the infrastructure and environments that we improve and create.

Join us and you could play a major role in enhancing the infrastructure of this beautiful rural setting, home of the famous Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

These posts present an excellent opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and experience within a successful, supportive, and collaborative team with a wealth of experience.

We prioritise support, learning, development, and wellbeing across our workforce. We also offer hybrid and flexible working that promotes a healthy work-life balance.

What you will be doing:

Based in Dorchester, close to the beautiful coast and countryside, this role provides an exciting opportunity to design and deliver highway improvements schemes for the communities of Dorset.

You will be working on a range of Local Transport Plan (LTP) and externally funded schemes from initial concept through all stages of design, construction supervision, to post completion reviews.

You will develop and utilise your civil and highway engineering design skills, working collaboratively with a range of both internal and external partners, stakeholders and the client team to ensure high quality schemes are delivered both on time and budget.

Dorset Council offer a wide range of training and support and are embracing a hybrid working culture that allows a mix of home and office working.

Occasionally, you may be required to attend meetings out of hours either in person or online.

The highway design role will focus on design and construction standards, procedures, techniques and health and safety in construction. Current schemes include new junctions, active travel schemes, public realm enhancements, and drainage schemes.

The Intelligent Transport Systems and Traffic signal design role will focus on the design and implementation of traffic signals and Intelligent Transport System projects, such as variable message signing, from initial concept through all stages of design, construction supervision and post-construction processes.
