    Harmeny Education Trust is a sector leading children's charity, providing therapeutic care and education for children with complex additional support needs. We work on a day and all-year-round residential basis, supporting children and young people aged 5 to 18 years. Harmeny is situated in a beautiful 35-acre estate, which includes residential and education accommodation, mature woodland, community garden, orchard, wildlife habitats and children's play areas. We are easily accessible by bus and there is ample parking. We are seeking Sessional Residential Child Care Workers (Weekends) to provide regular support to our skilled cottage teams, covering any of the following weekend shifts:
    • Friday backshift
    • Saturday or Sunday early shift
    • Saturday or Sunday backshift
    • Saturday or Sunday nightshift
    Applicants should be registered, or will need to register within the first six months of employment, with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) in line with the requirements for residential child care workers. We will consider experienced and inexperienced applicants, with or without the necessary qualifications, and provide a comprehensive induction, along with mentoring to equip sessional workers to support our work with some of Scotland's most remarkable children and young people. Driving is essential to the role. Sessional Residential Child Care Workers will receive the following hourly rates of pay:
    • Qualified: £16.00 per hour plus a holiday pay element of £1.93
    • Part-qualified: £14.61 per hour plus a holiday pay element of £1.76
    • Unqualified: £13.87 per hours plus a holiday pay element of £1.67

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Promote a positive ethos in the school consistent with Harmeny's vision, purpose and core values.
    2. Support the Care Management Team with the implementation of management decisions, consistent with the Harmeny and cottage plans, policies and procedures.
    3. Be an integral part of the Care staff team.
    4. Care for the children's everyday requirements and to help create a homely, caring and safe environment for all the children at Harmeny.
    5. Communicate and interact positively with children using solution-focussed and strengths-based principles in line with Harmeny policy, procedures and core values.
    6. Develop and implement care plans which address the needs of the child.
    7. Be involved in the development and implementation of risk assessment planning for children.
    8. Understand children's behaviour and support them to manage their behaviour themselves.
    9. Be involved in the development and implementation of cottage improvement plans that reflect recommendations from the Independent Care Review outcomes – "The Promise".
    10. Where required, as a last resort, implement physical intervention techniques.
    11. Support children's learning during and outwith the formal school day.
    12. Attend regular staff and children's meetings as required.
    13. Ensure that all children's personal records including case notes, reviews and medical information are kept up to date.
    14. Attend supervision, Annual Performance Review, training and other meetings as required.
    15. Participate in residential trips and holidays when required.
    16. Have a flexible approach to the timetable and working patterns at the discretion of the Residential Team Manager or Care Management Team.
    17. Undertake domestic and food preparation duties as directed, and ensure that others in the team also do so.
    18. Undertake induction and other relevant training as required to fulfil the duties of the post and maintain registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).
    19. Undertake any other duties as delegated by the management team that are consistent with the role of Residential Child Care Worker.

    Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

    1. A qualification in line with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) requirements for residential child care workers. For more details, please visit
    2. Full, clean driving licence.
    3. Experience in residential work and / or childcare, including working with children with complex social, emotional and behavioural needs.
    4. Knowledge and understanding of children who are looked after and accommodated, and children with complex additional support needs.
    5. Knowledge of child development, childcare legislation, good practice guidance, policy and procedures and a commitment to Children's Rights.
    6. Knowledge of outcomes of the Independent Care Review "The Promise".
    7. Understanding of the duty of care to children and colleagues.
    8. Understanding of the practice issues of physical intervention (PI), and ability to undertake PI when required.
    9. Good communication skills, both written and oral.
    10. Good organisational and administrative skills and computer literacy.
