Video games have emerged as a global phenomenon,
captivating a staggering 2.8 billion people worldwide in
2021 alone. In an article featured in Fact's print edition,

curator Hans Ulrich Obrist delves into the opinions of

digital artists, seeking to uncover the key elements
that define a great video game in the eyes of these
creative minds.
Throughout the years, the aesthetics and visual language
of games have influenced artistic practices, with artists
appropriating, modifying, and subverting existing video

games to reflect on virtual worlds, societal issues, and
the depiction of diverse realities. Today, artists are not
only critiquing games but also actively participating in
mainstream gaming, engaging with new audiences and
bringing fresh perspectives to the medium.
In order to gain insight into what makes a good video
game, Obrist posed a question to participating artists:
"What elements should every good game have?" The
responses varied greatly, reflecting the diversity of the
artists’ works and perspectives. Some artists
emphasized the importance of fun, immersion, and a
well-crafted narrative, while others highlighted the
value of surprises, freedom to explore, and inducing a
flow state for players. The discussions also touched
upon agency, interactivity, visual and auditory
aesthetics, and the potential to challenge conventional
gaming design principles.
