The responsibilities for the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero for 2023 are as follows:

  • Delivering security of energy supply
  • Ensuring properly functioning energy markets

  • Seizing the opportunities of net zero to lead the world in new green industries

For 2023, our priorities are:

  • Ensure security of energy supply this winter, next winter and in the longerterm bringing down energy bills and reducing inflation.
  • Ensure the UK is on track to meet its legally binding Net Zero commitments and support economic growth by significantly speeding up delivery of network infrastructure and domestic energy production.
  • Improve the energy efficiency of UK homes, businesses and public sector buildings to meet the 15% demand reduction ambition.
  • Deliver current schemes to support energy consumers with their bills and develop options for longterm reform to improve how the electricity market works for families and businesses.
  • Seize the economic benefits of Net Zero, including the jobs and growth created through investment in new green industries.

Job description:


The Portfolio Office team enable delivery for Industrial Decarbonisation & Emissions Trading [IDET] Directorate projects from concept through to completion.

We hold the Directorate to account on its legally binding Carbon Budget and policy objectives.


The team provides sub-portfolio level project management services to IDET workstreams and acts as the delivery levers for the IDET Director and Senior Leadership Team through the management of the Industry Portfolio Board, Planning, Risks and much more.

The team is made up of experienced project delivery and strategy professionals.

  • Must be 16 or over and not in fulltime education.
  • Must be and have been a resident of the UK/EEA for a minimum of 3 years (funding rules differ between England, Scotland, and Wales our Department will work with you to ensure that you are on the correct programme and that funding is available).
  • Cannot be in receipt of a qualification of the same level or higher in the same field in order to be eligible for the apprenticeship role (if you are unsure, please contact the vacancy holder with details of your qualification so we can check this for you)
  • Cannot currently be in receipt of funding or undertaking any other qualification.
  • Must have or be willing to work to obtaining GCSE equivalent in Maths and English of A
  • C or 9 to 4 in England.

Person specification:


  • Provide adhoc policy and administrative support to the team.
  • Organise internal and external stakeholder meetings and provide critical secretarial support for key governance groups including scheduling meetings, drafting agenda, taking minutes and sending readouts to the wider team.
  • Lead on updating of team SharePoint page, ensuring relevant team members provide uptodate information when required.
  • Assist in maintaining project controls and in producing project reports.
  • Responsible for project file management using robust version control. Organise key project meetings and provide secretariat support.
  • Work with risk manager/ risk owners to report risks to Portfolio Board.
  • Other adhoc duties.
