This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/ record. The post holder will provide visible professional nursing leadership, care governance and assurance, and nursing workforce planning, for all nursing staff across the full range of Royal Edinburgh Hospital and Associated Services (REAS), ensuring the delivery of high standards of professional and clinical nursing practice.
Accountable to the Chief Nurse REAS for maintaining and further developing high standards of nursing care provided to patients, ensuring compliance with best practice and national and local policies and guidelines, developing improvements in nursing practice and influencing future service delivery and nursing strategy.
Responsible for managing a small team of Nurse Consultants, Lead Nurses and Senior nurses including all aspects of staff governance, recruitment and selection, appraisal and personal development planning and individual performance management as appropriate within remit.
Present themselves as a visible accessible and authoritative nursing presence in ward and department settings, from whom staff, students, patients, and their families can seek advice and support. This role will include the authority to instigate changes which ensures patient, and their families receive timely patient centred, safe and effective care.
Actively participate as a key member of the REAS senior management team to support delivery of the strategic, clinical, and operational performance and quality outcomes. This post will have a delegated responsibility to provide an overarching role representing REAS nursing at a range of committees and forums across Lothian and in National Working Groups creating a corporate and cohesive response to actions required on a REAS wide basis e.g., HAI, clinical documentation, workforce planning.
This post will play a pivotal role in the governance and assurance of Excellence in Care and Safe and Effective Staffing Legislation on behalf of the Chief Nurse and the delivery of the NHS Lothian Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Plan.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full-time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
