    Job overview

    The purpose of the role is to provide senior oversight to live and same day remote screening service for patients experiencing mental health crisis (and other mental health symptoms), their families, carers; and other Healthcare Professionals including LAS, and the police. The postholder will keep service users as safe as possible, through use of sound clinical skills and effective risk assessments, signposting or referring patient to appropriate services.

    The post holder will act as the senior role model and supervisor to clinical members of the team to ensure they work to high standards. The post holder will need to co-ordinate robust multidisciplinary working and maintain excellent communication and working relationships with all staff across the Service and with partner crisis services within the SLP footprint. The post holder will provide management support as delegated by the Clinical Services lead, including supervision of staff, team training and service development initiatives. It is expected that the post holder be responsible for organising the roster always ensuing safe staffing. They will also be expected to deputise for the Clinical Service Lead in their absence.

    This role will be hosted by South London and Maudsley, however will work in partnership with South West London and St Georges NHS Trust and Oxleas NHS Trust.

    The post holder will be expected to work a shift system including nights and weekends

    Main duties of the job

  • To have oversight and ensure all calls received in a professional manner, screen and prioritise these calls appropriately – therefore lead the shift and team.
  • Demonstrate good risk assessment and management skills, ensuring that the decisions made regarding calls are in the best interest of service users' needs and safety. This may include transferring calls to appropriate specialist skill sets, e.g. CAMHS.
  • To assess high risk or complex patients to provide management advice and appropriate clinical interventions to support more junior members of the team on shift.
  • To operate within the legal requirements of the Mental Health Act and be able to exercise independent judgement in the assessment and diagnosis of mental health conditions.
  • Maintain relevant clinical and pharmaceutical knowledge, critically appraise and apply information in practice
  • To liaise with carers, incorporating their views in clinical formulation and management
  • Undertake clinical triaging of calls where required or escalated due to complexity by other team members to the service deciding on the correct pathway for the call - Refer/signpost callers to the appropriate downstream services, including non-statutory, third sector services.
  • Be aware of appropriate referral and escalation procedures in relation to difficult calls and utilise appropriate frameworks such as Trusted Assessment.

    Qualifications

    Essential criteria

  • Recognised Professional Qualification in Nursing (RMN), Social Work (Dip SW/CQSW) or Occupational Therapy
  • Post registration qualification in specialty or relevant experience
  • Mentorship for RMNs
  • Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Masters Degree
  • Experience

    Essential criteria

  • Substantial Post registration experience
  • Experience and knowledge of quality, standard setting and audit
  • Experience in managing complaints and quality assurance
  • Experience of working within acute and crisis services
  • Desirable criteria

  • Ability to review performance data and suggests ways of improving performance
  • Experience of working within a CAMHs services, and ability to work with crisis and high risk presentations of under-18 year olds
  • Comprehensive experience at local leadership level within speciality
  • Knowledge/Skills

    Essential criteria

  • Ability to analyse complex issues/problems, gather relevant information and exercise sound judgement in reaching the most appropriate conclusions.
  • Strong commitment to improving patient services with a clear focus on achieving performance goals
  • Competence in provision of clinical supervision/ people management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation and influencing skills demonstrated by the ability to engage others
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of a full range of therapeutic skills and approaches supported by further training in the specialty and management practice
  • Knowledge of STORM and or ADASTRA telephone and EPJ packages
