Job overview
Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport system. As a TfL Land Surveyor, you'll gain experience of working on a range of projects across London's transport infrastructure which support the design, engineering, construction and asset management processes. Land Surveyors make use of rapidly evolving technology such as drones, 3D laser scanners, satellite and inertial navigation systems to capture accurate data in new innovative ways.
Sustainability

Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL's work ethos, and we ensure that we operate in a sustainable way to protect and regenerate the natural world.

The Land Survey team provides data which supports the design of new sustainable travel initiatives such as cycle lanes or EV charging hubs.

We also assist with improving the sustainability of existing assets such as track geometry surveys enable improved ride quality and reduced power consumption.


What will I be doing?
As an apprentice, your 5year development programme will be made up of placements within the Land Survey team and wider Engineering team. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone's career is different, so every graduate's journey is unique.

Here's an idea of some of the project types and work experiences you'll be involved in:

  • 3D laser scanning of stations and buildings
  • Use of track measuring devices for track alignment and kinematic laser scanning
  • Topographic surveys for highways improvements and track renewals
  • 2D and 3D CAD drafting and modelling from point cloud data
  • Coordination of survey control networks using Total Stations, Digital Levels and GNSS receivers
  • Tunnel gauging surveys for new rolling stock
  • Virtual reality site tours using 3D models and 360degree photography
  • Processing of survey data including control network adjustments, coordinate reductions and point cloud registrations
  • Aerial and Drone photogrammetry surveys
  • Setting out and engineering support for construction projects
  • Deformation monitoring of earthworks, buildings and structures

  • BSc (Hons) Surveying and Mapping Science accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES).
    What training and support will you get?

Our awardwinning teams will support your ongoing development, through a wide range of onthejob practical experience and placements. Typically, you will be required to attend University 1 day per week. We'll support your professional development through a combination of training, mentoring, and networking. You'll also receive onetoone guidance throughout the programme from your:
Placement manager: Responsible for your daytoday management and support with your development and has line manager responsibility
Scheme sponsor:A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser
Buddy: Usually an apprentice or graduate who gives support to you and ensure that you feel welcomed in the organisation
Development adviser: Supports your professional development through providing career coaching and career progression at TfL
