About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We are looking for a Spatial Analysis Specialist to support the ESG team by providing technical expertise in spatial analysis, mapping, and satellite imagery analysis to enhance HSE risk visibility and interconnectedness.

This is a great opportunity for a detail-oriented and collaborative individual to contribute to ESG initiatives and develop strategies for addressing spatial challenges.

The Simandou Project is a Greenfield iron ore mining project located in the south-east of the Republic of Guinea, West Africa.

Simandou is one of the world's largest and richest high-grade iron ore deposits, demand for which is increasing as steelmakers look to reduce carbon emissions.

The Simandou project has a vast swath of associated ESG related risks. Location technology is bringing these risks and opportunities into focus.

Realising them relies on a suite of innovative technologies including a geographic information science (GIS) and remote sensing to generate spatial insights on ESG-related risks and opportunities across the project scope.

One of the key support areas to WCS HSSEC where we are currently resource constrained is GIS and Spatial Analysis.

We largely rely on WCS or overstretched Simfer resources to fill this gap.

As the breadth of ESG risks rise commensurate with project development, there will be an increased need of Spatial Analysis, GIS and remote sensing capability to locate and penetrate ESG risks before they become acute.

The Spatial Analysis Specialist will support the ESG team - including WCS secondees - in spatial analysis, mapping, satellite / airborne imagery analysis and improve HSE risk visibility and interconnectedness.

Reporting to the Senior Business Partner - Nature, Strategy and Partnerships and working in a challenging and exciting environment within ESG team, you will:

  • Provide technical support including spatial modelling, mapping, satellite imagery analysis, to rapidly process images and sensor readings of forests, coastlines, cropland etc. to spot ESG anomalies or patterns on a regional basis.
  • Map and analyze these findings via a geographic approach that incorporates business infrastructure, supply chains etc. Allowing ESG SME's to anticipate places where business and ESG priorities may clash or successfully merge with a view to tailoring strategies accordingly.
  • Prepare and participate in ESGrelated workshops and data gathering exercises.
  • Contribute to, and develop, action plans, maps for reports and spatial analysis recommendations with consultants, key Simandou partners and stakeholders.
  • Develop toolkits to enable quicker or more intricate processing of ESG data.

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Geography or Environment with modules in GIS, or a relevant combination of 6+ years professional experience in GIS.
  • Experience with ArcGIS or QGIS software packages.
  • Experience with remote sensing / satellite imagery analysis is desirable.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Professional visual skill set to deliver quality mapping outputs, reporting figures and digital products.
  • Have a passion for teamwork, respect and building positive relationships with peers, especially across diverse cultures.
  • Continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to prioritise in extremely challenging and dynamic environments

What we offer

Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you've helped the world progress.

  • A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
  • A competitive salary package with annual cash incentive awards for eligible employees
  • Career development & education assistance to further your ambitions
  • Access top tier familyfriendly health and medical programs and pension plan
  • Wellbeing benefits
