    Job summary

    Come and join the team at GSTT in the role of Principal Pharmacist for Acute and General Medicine

    This role is responsible for leading the GSTT Acute and General Medicine Pharmacy team and developing pharmacy services within their portfolio to ensure patients receive the safest and most effective pharmaceutical care.

    At all times, the post holder will work closely with the Associate Chief Pharmacist - ISM to ensure that the services are developed in a strategic and forward-thinking manner and be provided with ample personal and professional developmental opportunities. The post will provide a dynamic link between clinical practice and service development by creating new models for delivering care and ensuring the best outcomes from pharmaceutical care are obtained.

    The post holder will act as a role model for the wider pharmacy team and be a pharmacy expert in this field to ensure a consistently high clinical pharmacy service in line with corporate objectives and the NHS long term plan.

    The role will be responsible for managing all pharmacy aspects of the AGM service, including governance, quality and safety, effective transfer of care between health care providers and a close management of the AGM pharmacy budget. They will work closely with the Acute and General Medicine clinical leadership team and have opportunity to represent the department at high level, strategic meetings.

    Job responsibilities

    As the Principal Pharmacist for Acute and General Medicine (AGM), the post holder will be responsible for providing leadership, and line management when necessary, to the GSTT AGM Pharmacy team, inclusive of the following areas:

  • Acute Medical Admissions
  • Older Persons Unit / Stroke
  • A&E and Urgent Care
  • General Medicine
  • The post holder will work collaboratively with the Associate Chief Pharmacist Integrated and Specialist Medicine and relevant members of the clinical Directorate Management Team to strategically develop pharmacy services in line with national, regional and local priorities.

    The post holder will act as a role model for the wider pharmacy team and be a pharmacy expert in this field to ensure a consistently high clinical pharmacy service in line with corporate objectives and the NHS long term plan. The role will be responsible for managing all pharmacy aspects of the AGM service, including governance, quality and safety aspects and a close management of the AGM pharmacy budget.

    The role will work collaborative with members of the wider Pharmacy Seniors Group to contribute to the development of the wider Pharmacy Clinicals services agenda and associated workforce and departmental innovations.

    This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring leader to take on service development projects, work collaboratively across the MDT, undertake financial planning and management of a pharmacy service, oversee the development of appropriate pharmacy governance pathways for this speciality and undertake and support research in this clinical area.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications / Education

    Essential

  • MPharm degree (or recognised equivalent)
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Clinical Pharmacy Practice (PGCert, MSc or equivalent)
  • Non-medical prescriber qualification
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Desirable

  • Leadership or management qualification
  • Member of relevant professional groups (RPS, UKCPA)
  • Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to prioritise and plan work effectively, alone and for a team, including the ability to delegate
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment, whist remaining focused and effective.

    Essential

  • Extensive recent post-registration hospital experience as a clinical pharmacist in a speciality aligned to AGM
  • Evidence of working as a non-medical prescriber, either at ward level or within an outpatient capacity
  • Experience of working as a part of clinical and operational leadership MDT
  • Experience of managing staff / acting as a line manager
  • Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals within and external to Pharmacy to deliver a service and achieve service improvements
  • Experience of developing and implementing policies, procedures, guidelines and patient group directions
  • Experience of clinical governance and risk management
  • Knowledge of how budgetary monitoring can inform service delivery and improvement
  • Knowledge of the wider NHS landscape and how introduction of ICBs / ICS structures influence service design and delivery
  • Knowledge of how medicines are commissioned
  • Detailed understanding of the clinical audit process and how this can support service development and improved patient care.
  • Understanding of the principles involved with Quality Improvement and examples of delivering a QI project.
  • Understanding and demonstrable knowledge of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
