  • The Bellingham Workshop is one of three in England. Mechanical Engineering provide a safe and economic repair service for all the vehicles, machinery and equipment (VME) used by the Forestry England in the delivery of its national objectives.
    Job description:The apprenticeship offers an exciting opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of skills working in both forest and other habitats.
The main responsibilities of the Apprentice Mechanic role are working with other staff to:

  • To provide efficient value for money service to help the Forestry England to achieve its aims by maintaining and repairing vehicles and specialist forestry equipment, while ensuring that the fleet is professionally and cost effectively maintained to maximise availability. This will include inspecting, repairing, servicing, welding fabrication and recovery work both in the workshop, worksites and other areas. You will typically be maintaining and repairing items such as trailers, quads, cars, vans, 4X4s, and forest harvesters and forwarders.
  • The post holder will be expected to:
  • Undertake servicing and repairs on vehicles and equipment such as chainsaws, trailers, quad bikes through to larger agricultural machinery and up to Forest harvesting machines.
  • Assess and carry out all assigned tasks, identifying the most appropriate method of effecting a repair/maintenance whilst considering cost, downtime and ensuring the safety of all.
  • Work effectively with the Service Manager on spares requirements to ensure a cost effective and efficient repair is carried out.
  • Complete and comply with all administrative systems required by the workshop and meet the return deadlines requested.
  • Work effectively as part of a small team, and when requested responding quickly to unexpected work and requests raised by supervisors and managers.
The role involves manual work outdoors in all weathers in the forest environment.

The job is varied and wide ranging, requiring close team working, enthusiasm and ability to deliver at pace across a range of skills and disciplines.


We require all our staff to be welcoming, enthusiastic and approachable, with a willingness to engage with team discussion and with visitors to the forest in a polite and appropriate manner.

You will undertake the Level 5 Forestry Engineering Apprenticeship and will be trained and obtain awards including

  • Level 3 award in emergency first aid at work (in a forestry context known as +F)


Throughout the 2-year apprenticeship you will be required to attend formal training which will require you to travel and stay away from home.

You will also be required to carry out revision and study and record your work within a portfolio. To successfully complete the apprenticeship, you will be required to pass a final, end point assessment.

Person specification:


Essential Criteria

  • Evidence of good people skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Willingness and ability to acquire new practical skills through training courses, practice and by learning from colleagues.
  • GCSE (Grades A-C or 4 and above) or equivalent in Maths and English.

Desirable Experience

  • Ability to use MS Office packages, including Outlook. Basic computer, IT and mobile phone skills
  • Full UK driving licence
