  • Experience of undertaking clinical audits and root cause analysis of incidents and accidents and recommending measures of identified needs.
  • Main duties of the job

    Provide specialist advice to Trust staff on manual handling, ergonomic and risk assessment issues. Lead in and provide expert advice and support to staff at all levels within the Trust on issues relating to moving and handling staff and patient safety.

    Promote best practice in the field of manual handling, acting as a role model for the Trust. Disseminate up to date information in moving and handling throughout the Trust.

    Responsible for delivery of up to date, clear, understandable information including safer handling techniques, underpinned by evidence-based decision making that links to recognised safer handling techniques and risk management.

    To support and advise the Trust as appropriate in complying with all HSE and legislative guidance and requirements for reduction of manual handling risk, including EU directives, statutory body requirements, hazards and safety notices and advice relating to patient, public or staff safety, personal privacy and confidentiality.

    Job description

    Job responsibilities

    To lead and manage the Manual Handling clinical and non-clinical training and provide a highly specialised advisory service for the Trust.

    In both the moving and handling of patients and inanimate loads to fulfil statutory requirements of manual handling, ergonomics and the risk assessment processes associated with all the work areas of the organisation.

    To develop and participate in a training network in safe moving and handling, for all staff of the Trust. Ensuring that the Trust meets the requirements of European and nation regulations and standards.

    To provide specialist advice to Trust staff in safe moving and handling and act as the subject matter expert in moving and handling for the co-ordinate and undertake Manual Handling Training of Trust staff and Bank staff.

    The successful applicant will be responsible for the maintenance/recording of all manual handling records and to review and maintain up to date policies for the manual handling of patients and inanimate load handling to ensure compliance with relevant legislation. Your responsibilities will include coordination/delivering organisational wide induction, mandatory sessions, and risk assessments.

    Responsible for delivery of up to date, clear, understandable information including safer handling techniques, underpinned by evidence-based decision making that links to recognised safer handling techniques and risk management.

    As Service Lead respond to requests for assistance with assessment of patients with more complex moving and handling needs; this will include working clinically to support ward staff, advising on the correct techniques and equipment to be used on an individual patient basis.

    Have a high level of clinical skills relating to manual handling and the use of complex equipment and the required level of clinical training to support staff with the transportation of patients.

    Lead on all the investigation of incidents involving manual handling, including RIDDOR investigations. To liaise with the relevant departments, Risk and Patient Safety, Occupational Health, Managers and Senior staff regarding any recommendations to be actioned.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Degree Level in recognised Qualification RCN Registered Nursing / AHP HCPC Registered / Sports and Exercise Science to Degree level
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development / relevant courses
  • Membership of the local branch of the back exchange (LGMBE)
  • Teaching qualification or experience in teaching, group facilitation and assessing experience
  • Single Handed Care Trained
  • Accredited Train the Trainer Course in Moving and Handling
  • Desirable

  • Post Graduate Certificate in Back Care/ Ergonomics or equivalent qualification or skills
  • Membership of a relevant professional body ( IOSH, HCPC, NMC)
  • Membership of the National Back Exchange

  • Currently an active core trainer within NHS Acute Organisation.
  • Can demonstrate experience of manual handling training at induction and refresher level in NHS environment.
  • Has experience of undertaking manual handling risk assessments.
  • Significant patient handling and inanimate load experience.
  • Significant experience within an acute hospital setting and have a practical problem -solving approach to moving and handling issues .
  • Significant experience in developing and implementing training programmes to meet moving and handling needs of different staff groups.
  • Experience of developing evidence -based systems to assist departments with risk assessment for multidisciplinary and complex situations including safe systems of work.
  • Experience of undertaking clinical audits and root cause analysis of incidents and accidents and recommending measures of identified needs
  • Undertake Manual Handling inspections and audits
  • To produce quarterly and annual reports relating to manual handling
  • Experience of procurement of equipment.
