    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Education Lead, to join our Team in the Emergency Department (ED) at Alder Hey Children's Hospital Trust. The post holder should have an enthusiasm for developing the future workforce and will be responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality multi professional learning environments within the trust. There is a requirement to deliver training to the entire nursing workforce ranging from Band 3 HCAs to Band 8 APNP's. We offer a nursing experience that is both challenging and rewarding.

    Alder Hey is one of the largest Children's ED in the country and see approximately 70,000 patients per year. We are also the regional Paediatric Trauma Centre.

    As the Education Lead, you will be an enthusiastic, energetic, proactive nurse, committed to your professional development and that of others. Joining our other Band 6 Practice Educator, you will have significant experience in Emergency Nursing and demonstrable teaching experience. You will be an active Practice Assessor with students. Instructor status in Immediate/Advanced Life Support would be advantageous.

    Main duties of the job

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a high level of knowledge, skill and understanding of clinical practice relevant to a Paediatric ED.
  • Co-ordinate and support the professional development of all grades of ED staff by delivering classroom-based training, supervised clinical practice, assessment and structured feedback.
  • Co-ordinate and develop a robust training programme to ensure all ED staff are up to date with Mandatory Training.
  • Participate in organisational nurse education projects, specific to ED, to support the upskilling of the team to meet their competencies and to support our service user needs.
  • Be clinically visible/available in and around the department by maintaining professional links with all staff and attend handovers, briefings and meetings as appropriate.
  • Be prepared to work clinically as part of the shift team in the event of unexpected operational issues in the department.
  • Contribute to the delivery and review of nurse development programmes for assessors/supervisors in order to meet the learning needs of students within ED.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver teaching sessions as required. When appropriate follow up classroom teaching with supervised clinical practice for the staff member to be able to practice without constant direct supervision.
  • To report to both the Divisional and ED teams on Risk and Governance relating to education.

    Communication

  • Provide clinical and professional advice and support to ED based staff.
  • To utilise constructive communication skills to diplomatically identify areas of concern regarding medical/nursing practice and feedback to respective managers.
  • Forge professional links with other specialities within the Trust and external agencies to share knowledge and secure educational opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain links with Trust Education Team to support with assessors/supervisors in the delivery of Trust educational goals.
  • Keep up to date with Departmental and Trust information and news through all appropriate communication mediums.
  • Ensure effective communication channels are used appropriately to facilitate the flow of information between ED and the Divisional team.
  • Attend trust wide meetings related to education to represent ED and promote own professional recognition and development.
  • Analytical Skills

  • Develop an annual training needs analysis for the department.
  • Participate in the investigation and review of complaints, clinical incidents and practice reviews and positively implement outcomes that impact on practice development within the department.
  • Participate in audits relating to nursing practice, Trust standards and national targets.
  • Participate and contribute to clinical governance reports that contribute to any aspect of service improvement.
  • Produce timely reports when required to support performance and review of outcomes.
  • Planning and Organising Skills

  • Ensure that clinical practice is in accordance with Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines and is based on the latest research findings and constitutes best practice.
  • Ensure that all new starters in the department are enrolled onto an appropriate local professional development programme appropriate to their band, experience and role.
  • Ensure all staff have a fair and equal means to apply for clinical and academic learning opportunities.
  • Demonstrate resilience and positivity considering departmental and operational challenges.
  • Ensure training and education within the department is responsive to the needs of the service and to the needs of individual staff.

  • Ensure staff are aware when core skills training needs updating and facilitate its completion.
  • Continuously monitor practice learning activities against quality assurance standards enabling ongoing enhancement of the learning experience.

  • Act as a professional role model who leads by example regarding attitudes, conduct and appearance.
  • Maintain clinical competency in a full range of emergency nursing skills and in all areas of the department. Keep own clinical knowledge updated and ensure own practice is of the highest standard and represents current and best practice guidelines.
  • Take appropriate steps to address all role specific and personal learning needs.
  • Contribute to maintaining and improving own professional knowledge and competence, and that of assessors/supervisors in practice.
  • Manage own workload independently prioritising as required.
  • Participate in clinical supervision/professional coaching.
  • Co-operate with and adhere to all statutory regulations, codes of practice, local policies and departmental health and safety rules internally within own Trust/ PCT base, and with external partner organisations.

  • To implement, monitor and evaluate the practice development plans in accordance with the needs of the patient group.
  • To work in partnership with the Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses and Matrons to contribute to the development of a clinical practice Education programme that is driven by clinical need within ED.
  • Ensure staff training reflects the service needs of the department.
  • Ensure all learning from incidents is shared with wider teams and changes to practice are shared and evaluated.
  • Share and present findings from learning events and training to Divisional Team to ensure board assurance.
  • Share with senior colleagues, evidence of performance and quality through training, audit and research, disseminate results to all staff with an appropriate action plan.

  • Have an awareness of cost-improvement initiatives when developing or introducing new processes to the department.

  • Responsible for Line Management of Band 6 ED Practice Educator
  • Assist in the recruitment of staff for the Emergency Department.
  • Support team leaders with performance/capability reviews and appraisals.
  • Actively participate in the annual, collaborative appraisal process to enable achievement of objectives and management of learning needs.
  • Ensure that equality and diversity issues are recognised, addressed in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Support staff following practice errors and facilitate processes whereby they are supported and able to return to full clinical duties.

  • To collate statistical information and prepare and present reports relating to the education agenda.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to training attendance and completion of written assessments and sign off for clinical skills to include medical devices.
  • Maintain up to date and accurate records/live registers of assessors/supervisors/students in the practice setting.
  • Attend and report data to meetings/teams outside of ED to provide assurance on training and education within ED.
  • Work with the wider iDigital service to support digital maturity in the department.

  • Facilitate research-based nursing practice by encouraging involvement in departmental research groups and encouraging staff to undertake research projects.

    Education and training

  • Registered Nurse
  • Mentorship qualification or equivalent
  • Recent evidence of academic study
  • APLS (Advanced Paediatric Life Support) or equivalent
