Basic Requirements:


  • Level 2 Diploma in Animal Management.
  • Minimum of 6 months of relevant industry experience working with laboratory animals.
  • Experience in routine animal husbandry and a genuine passion for their welfare.
  • Ability to gain or current holder of a Home Office personal license
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment in their own performance and take responsibility for their own actions.
  • Ability to coordinate activities logically, problem solving, maintain confidentiality, and be able to work with interruptions.
  • IT Skills: Familiarity and expertise with Excel, Word, bespoke Database, or other similar production software.

Full driving licence and own transport it essential.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Conduct daily animal husbandry duties, including feeding, watering, cleaning, animal handling and animal observations as directed by the team leader.
  • Complete daily monitoring and reporting of the animal unit environment including temperatures, and the security and suitability of animal housing.
  • Follow work instructions and procedures for safe entry to and exit from animal units to maintain site security and animal barrier unit biosecurity.
  • Conduct cleaning and maintaining animal rooms, associated areas and equipment, in accordance with work instructions.
  • Carry out procedures as required.
  • Completion of all relevant departmental records, including day books, production data reports and stock availability records.
  • Notify team leader regarding any suspected or recorded problems in relation to animal welfare or unit environment.
  • Receiving & despatching of goods in/out of animal facility, using correct sterilisation procedures to maintain 'animal barrier status
  • The production, birthing, weaning, sexing, counting and weighing of animals.
  • Rehousing and grouping of animals in accordance with Home Office guidelines, as directed by team leader
  • Be a "buddy" to new staff, training them on cleaning, feeding and watering, animal handling and pen labelling.
  • Perform other tasks that fall within the job holder's ability, competence and experience, when requested by the team leader, or other members of the management team as required.
