    Job summary

    We are looking for a committed and passionate registered professional to lead as a Children and Young People (CYP) Mental Health Champion within Leeds Childrens Hospital. If you have experience of working with Children and Young People in crisis or have the transferrable skills required and hold a professional registration with a governing body with the experience to shape CYP mental health care for Leeds Childrens Hospital, we would love to hear from you.

    This position is full time for a fixed term of 12 months to provide the key functions of the national recommendations set out by NHS England and RCPCH for CYP mental health in an acute setting.

    The successful applicant will be committed to improving the experience of CYP and their families/carers. The applicant will be a role model in CYP mental health care and be willing to develop and implement national and local education and training to increase confidence in Leeds Childrens Hospital colleagues through bedside support, sourcing, signposting, and advocating for our service users, their families / carers and provide the support to ward-based teams throughout Leeds Childrens Hospital.

    Main duties of the job

    This is an exciting position as a dedicated lead to improve the experiences of CYP, their families / carers & the Leeds Childrens Hospital (LCH) staff in an acute setting by facilitating improvements in joint working across LTHT & wider system in Leeds and York Partnership Integrated Care Board. The role aims to improve care pathways by advocating & implementing best practice within an acute setting within LCH. There may be times that the candidate may be required to work cross city occasionally, however this role will be within Childrens services. This will require the post holder to be in the clinical areas, with an expectation to adapt to the unpredictability of CYP Mental Health care. The successful applicant will be committed to improving the experience of CYP and their families/carers.

    The key functions include;

    Building team confidence & support across LCH to care for children and young people in crisis or distress

    Encourage uptake of training through a planned & prepared training and education framework for ward-based staff, aligning to national training and mandatory and priority training within LTHT.

    Provide joint working across LTHT for Children & Young peoples mental & physical health. This will require excellent communication skills in advocating for vulnerable Children and Young People in crisis by working collaboratively with colleagues & representing LCH within a network of community of practice in West Yorkshire.

    2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

    To provide visible, credible professional clinical leadership, supporting the clinical management of children with mental health conditions who have been admitted to an acute paediatric setting within the Leeds Childrens Hospital.

    To improve patient experience, quality, and efficiency by focusing on the children that present to an acute setting with mental health problems that impact on their planned care and discharge.

    To ensure the nursing care delivered to children and young people with mental and physical health needs is of a high quality, research based, and patient and family focused.

    To improve the experience of children with mental health problems, liaising effectively between social care, community and CAMHS services.

    To support the wider paediatric nursing and medical team, by arranging training opportunities to up-skill all unregistered and registered nursing teams on effectively managing young peoples mental health needs.

    To be an effective role model for acute staff within childrens services, with the aim of supporting knowledge, skill and experience in Mental Health practice

    Support the West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership in achieving key quality indicators in relation to childrens mental health in acute care settings, providing evidence-based practice and development of new services/pathways, including audit and change management.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Registration held with a professional body (HCPC registered or Registered Mental Health or Childrens NMC registered).
  • Recognised teaching qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience of teaching/supervising learners
  • Desirable

  • Bachelor's Degree in Paediatric or Mental Health Nursing or equivalent
  • Evidence of working at or willing to work towards masters level in a health related subject
  • Experience

  • Post qualification experience at Band 6 or equivalent within a specialty role
  • Significant recent experience of working with children and young people with mental health presentations

  • Experience in developing and/or reviewing standards/policies
  • Change managemtn experience
  • Experience in supervising, mentoring, and appraising staff
  • Clinical Supervision experience
