    About the role

    Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Design Manager to join our Power T&D division and be responsible for managing the Cabling Design Team.

    The role will be based in either Derby or London (will need to be able to commute to both locations).

    We offer a flexible working model and are also open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share).

    Role purpose:

    The Design Manager's focus will be to :

  • Proactively support the Cable Systems design activities whether they are standalone or part of multidisciplinary contracts.
  • Proactively support the Cable Systems Chief Engineer and Head of Design Technical to support technology projects and strategic design initiatives.
  • Providing management and leadership to the team.
  • To ensure that design team provides robust and optimal designs and documentation for each individual project.
  • Promote cooperation between the different teams.
  • Promote a proactive team culture which ensures shared learning and best practice, good communication, work across boundaries and recognition of success.
  • Develop and refine processes within the team.
  • Grow and develop capabilities in the Cable Systems Engineering team in order to meet the growth in the industry to maintain BB position as the contractor of choice in Power Transmission & Distribution

    • What you'll be doing

    Key Accountabilities:

  • Set the strategic direction for their team in line with department procedures, the client and internal service levels whilst retaining full responsibility for the team.
  • Actively promote and demonstrate Group values and behaviours through day-to-day work.
  • Ensure adherence to Governance processes and the Balfour Beatty Gated lifecycle.

    • Key Responsibilities:

  • Closely collaborate with other Design Managers and promote team collaborate with the Designers and Technicians from the other disciplines involved in each project to ensure coordination of different disciplines working on the same projects.
  • Actively liaise with the Engineering Managers for the projects the team is working on.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Cabling Chief Engineer for developing and maintaining the teams technical competencies and expertise.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Cabling Chief Engineer on any technical challenges affecting tender development and live projects.
  • Support Lead Designers during tender development. Responsible for ensuring the budget, programme and risks for their teams activities for each tender are adequate and provided in a timely manner.
  • Ensure delivery of the Cabling scope of works for each project on time and on budget, in compliance with customer requirements, quality standards and safety by design principles.

  • Corporate membership (or working towards) of an Engineering Institution (e.g. ICE, IET, IMechE).

    • Desirable:

  • Previous experience multi discipline design coupled with familiarity with NG technical specification requirements
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, being able to relate to people at all levels in an organisation and to establish and maintain respect both professionally and personally.
