    Lead Inpatient Physiotherapist Band 8a - job share

    An exciting opportunity to work as part of a job share for an experienced Physiotherapist to jointly lead inpatient physiotherapy services at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) , one of two main sites of Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust. We are looking to recruit a motivated Physiotherapist to provide clinical, operational and professional leadership to the inpatient physiotherapy service at UHL.

    You will jointly lead a large team of physiotherapists (approximately 55 staff) providing therapy to patients in wide-ranging inpatient environments.

    This post would suit a highly specialist Physiotherapist who has achieved expertise in their own professional field and is now ready to expand knowledge and skills to work in this key leadership role. You will be passionate about improving the inpatient physiotherapy service and working collaboratively with the wider Trust to support patient care..

    Main duties of the job

    Your responsibility will be for inpatient physiotherapy at UHL, but you will also be part of the wider Therapies Team. The role will be directly accountable to the Head of Adult Physiotherapy and work closely with other Therapy Leads and community partners.

    You will jointly lead a large team of physiotherapists (approximately 55 staff) providing therapy to patients in wide-ranging inpatient environments.

    A strong emphasis is placed on development of staff with good access to internal and external support for ongoing development. An exciting new project is due to launch around supervision and support provided to staff.

    Job responsibilities

    Job Summary:

  • To lead the UHL Inpatient Physiotherapy team and carry a clinical caseload.
  • To provide clinical, professional and operational leadership to the Inpatient Physiotherapy service for UHL working in collaboration with outpatient physiotherapy lead and head of adult physiotherapy as required.
  • To work closely with head of adult physiotherapy, Inpatient Physiotherapy lead at QEH and the Lead Community Physio to develop the physiotherapy service across Lewisham and Greenwich Trust (LGT).
  • To ensure Inpatient Physiotherapy services are proactive and supportive of LGT objectives.
  • To work closely with multi-disciplinary colleagues across health and social care to support integration around patient care.
  • To deliver a highly specialised and advanced standard of Physiotherapy assessment, treatment and management for patients
  • Key Result Areas & Performance:

  • To be the Lead Inpatient Physiotherapist at UHL, advising on Inpatient Physiotherapy issues, working closely with the Head of adult Physiotherapy and Head of Therapies, representing Inpatient Physiotherapy within the Trust and to outside agencies, as required
  • To work closely with other inpatient and social care colleagues and community providers to develop integrated multidisciplinary care.

    To be responsible for maintaining up-to-date knowledge and skills at an advanced level in the practice of Inpatient Physiotherapy

    To initiate, develop and implement innovative models of service delivery in collaboration with the Head of adult Physiotherapy and Head of Therapies.

    To be responsible for maintaining advanced knowledge of relevant health and social care initiatives and legislation, and to implement improvements inpractice to meet these.

    To actively participate in meetings with the Head of adult Physiotherapy and Head of Therapies, including operational meetings with the senior inpatient staff members, in order to advise on all aspects of the Inpatient Physiotherapy Service.

    To deputise for the Head of adult Physiotherapy and Head of Therapies in their absence for relevant matters.

    To provide cover for other Therapy leads in their absence as required

    To ensure that own practice and service meets agreed local and national standards and clinical governance requirements

    To undertake regular review of and evaluation of own work through the use and application of evidence-based practice, audits, research and effective outcome measures

    To lead and participate in clinical work and to promote a high standard of expertise within Inpatient Physiotherapy, and to ensure these standards are maintained by all staff.

    To be professionally and legally accountable for aspects of Inpatient Physiotherapy treatment and care delivered to patients to ensure a high standard of clinical care.

    To be responsible for allocating and managing own clinical caseload of clients with highly complex needs.

    To act as an expert resource on Inpatient Physiotherapy, providing specialist support and advice to the Inpatient Physiotherapy team, students, members of the multi-disciplinary team and professionals working in Social Services and voluntary sectors. To develop, promote and deliver Inpatient Physiotherapy services that meet the needs of the local population, ensuring the service is effective, equitable and patient focused.

    To identify professional and operational issues that need to be addressed at strategic level, and to alert the Head of adult Physiotherapy so as to reach appropriate agreed actions. This may include developing proposals / bids in an attempt to gain additional funding for areas of service development.

    To lead on the implementation of multidisciplinary initiatives within the Inpatient Physiotherapy team.

    To initiate, develop and implement Inpatient Physiotherapy guidelines and protocols in collaboration with the Head of adult Physiotherapy and Head of Therapies.

    To work with the Head of adult Physiotherapy and Head of Therapies to ensure that the Inpatient Physiotherapy service responds locally to relevant national initiatives and guidelines.

    To initiate and lead the services audit/research cycle

  • To successfully implement changes in work structure and/or work patterns within the Inpatient Physiotherapy team, using advanced communication and change management skills.

    To lead on the ongoing review and evaluation of the skill mix of the team in order to ensure the department can best respond to the changing needs of patients referred to the service.

    To lead the Inpatient Physiotherapy Team, ensuring that all team members are practising effectively within agreed local and national standards and competency frameworks.

    To be responsible for the allocation and prioritisation of workload for all Inpatient Physiotherapy staff in the team, to ensure that resources are matched efficiently and effectively to client needs. To delegate responsibilities to the staff in keeping with their grade and competency

    To ensure that all team members are participating effectively in professional and operational supervision

    To lead the appraisal process across the whole team. In doing so, ensure that all team members are provided with, and are participating effectively in, regular appraisal sessions in line with LGT procedures.

    To be responsible for recruiting to Inpatient Physiotherapy staff vacancies up to and including Band 7 level. This will include creating advertisements, writing job descriptions and person specifications, organising and participating in short-listing, interviewing (including chairing) and selection of applicants. To act as an assessor for the recruitment of staff in other teams when appropriate.

    To lead on the provision of learning and development opportunities for individual therapy staff and the Inpatient Physiotherapy team, to ensure that they achieve their work competencies, personal development plans, and meets local and national standards.

    To lead the provision of learning and development opportunities to allied professionals, social care and support staff, where this relates to specialist inpatient Physiotherapy skills and knowledge, in order to support the delivery of effective and cohesive multi-disciplinary services.

    To act as authorised signatory for clinical equipment, locum time sheets, eroster etc for designated staff.

    To oversee the monitoring and re-ordering of stock items in the service.

    To provide regular and accurate statistical data and analysis of Inpatient Physiotherapy services, including details of demand and capacity, for utilisation as a management tool and to contribute to the Therapy Department reports.

  • To actively and skilfully promote positive links with other departments, within Physiotherapy, other health professions, statutory social care organisations and the voluntary sector, locally and nationally.

    To develop and maintain professional links with other Senior Physiotherapy staff across neighbouring Trusts in order to share information, co-work and inform best practice.

    To represent Physiotherapy services at Trust and external agency meetings as directed by the MSK Therapies and Head of Therapies.

    To make reasonable efforts to resolve verbal complaints and to be responsible for ensuring that clients are informed of the Trust's formal complaint procedure if an individual wishes to take further action. To assist and support staff in this process.
