Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Therapy Assistant to join our in-patient therapy team at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. This post provides the opportunity to work in the integrated acute medicine therapy team, which currently provides therapy services to a variety of in-patients across both the Sandwell and City Hospital sites.
In this role you would be required to work as part of a multidisciplinary team on the medical wards, assisting qualified therapists in completing comprehensive assessments of patients and carrying out individual treatment plans. These activities will contribute to improving patient's mobility, increasing their function and promoting their independence, in order to facilitate a safe discharge from hospital. You will also regularly complete onward referrals as part of a holistic discharge. You will use your knowledge and physical rehabilitation skills and techniques to help patients to participate in specified activities general care and handling, transfers, toileting, mobilisation, practising functional activities, instructing patients/carers in the use of equipment and teaching or monitoring exercise programmes in group or 1:1 settings.
If you don't hold a Level 3 qualification you will be expected to undertake the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship (therapy pathway) within 6 months of commencing in post.
Main duties of the job
Implement treatment programmes and rehabilitation protocols devised by Therapists without direct supervision. This involves the management of patients in groups and on an individual basis. Supervision takes the form of regular access to a qualified Therapist, informal feedback, training, peer review and participation in the Trust Appraisal process
Assist in the day to day delivery and organisation of the service through direct and non-direct patient duties (such as information gathering, phone calls, onward referrals) to ensure priorities are met. This involves the efficient and effective management of own caseload
Provide induction and informal training for support workers where appropriate.
You will work closely with both Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists to deliver evidence based patient care, which will be supported by our strong commitment to staff support, clinical supervision and teamwork. The acute medicine environment is fast paced and therefore requires someone who thrives under this type of pressure and who is flexible and adaptable.
Work effectively in the provision of a flexible, patient centred approach to rehabilitation that will include weekend working on a rotational basis as part of the 7 day service we operate. We also will be looking towards providing a future 8AM-8PM service which you may contribute towards.
About us
The Medicine Therapy team is based across both Sandwell General Hospital and Birmingham City Hospital. The team comprises of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, therapy assistant practitioners and a frailty activity assistant. The entire qualified therapists are registered with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) and are also members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and Royal College of Occupational therapy. We work closely with members of the other allied health professional like Dieticians and Speech and language therapist to support the independence and rehabilitation of our service users.
We work to improve the Therapy status of inpatients and the management of long term conditions. We work in a variety of specialist areas including Care of the elderly wards, Cardiology, Haematology, Gastroenterology and General Medical wards. We also work very closely with other teams within the therapy cohort namely Respiratory, stroke (neuro), Macmillan and Trauma and Orthopaedic therapy teams. The Medicine therapy team have also close ties with the community rehab beds based at Rowley Regis and Leasowes to establish appropriate patients are sent through and also for an efficient continuity of care from an acute to a community setting.
