About the Role:


South Rural PCN has a fantastic opportunity for a GP assistant (GPA) to join our team on a full-time basis for 37.5 hours per week based at Constable Country Medical Practice.

The GPA position is a support role, covering administrative tasks and, if appropriate, some basic clinical duties, to assist the GPs, enabling them to make the best use of consultation time.

The post-holder will form part of our multi-disciplinary, primary-care team and contribute to the smooth running of the surgery.

The main duties of this role will include:

  • Maintaining a clean, tidy and effective working area at all times.
  • Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP(s) regarding actions required.
  • Signposting some received correspondence to others, e.g., clinical pharmacist, practice nurse.
  • Supporting practice patients by arranging appointments, onward referrals, clinical tests and follow up appointments.
  • Preparing patients, prior to seeing the GP(s), by taking a brief history and basic observations.
  • Conducting urinalysis, taking blood pressure.
  • Performing ECGs.
  • Performing phlebotomy.
  • Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
  • Supporting GP(s) in liaising with external agencies such as helping to arrange patient admission while the GP(s) continue with the consultation.
  • Supporting the GP(s) with wound care and immunisations.
  • Attending a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed.
  • Contributing to public health campaigns (e.g., flu clinics) through advice or direct care.

  • Experience of working with the general public.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting.
  • Administrative experience.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • IT skills, including experience of working with a clinical system.
  • Excellent communication skills and a friendly manner.
  • Ability to understand the need to maintain confidentiality and data security, at all times.
  • Ability to multitask and to work accurately under pressure.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as being comfortable working independently.

Desirable:

  • Healthcare qualification.
  • Phlebotomy qualification.
  • Vaccination certification.

South Rural PCN was formed in June 2019 with five like-minded practices wanting to provide a joined up service for local communities.

To achieve this we are looking to reshape our clinical teams by developing new and exciting skill mixes, which not only diversify our workforce, but allows us to provide a better care package for our patients.


The PCN provides services to 56,000 patients across rural Suffolk and is headed by 2 proactive, supportive and committed Clinical Directors.

Bildeston Health Centre, Constable Country Medical Practice (East Bergholt and Capel St Mary), Hadleigh Health Centre (Boxford), The Holbrook and Shotley Surgery and Needham Market Country Practice.


We use SystmOne clinical system and consult with our patients using a range of methods from face to face, video, telephone and eConsult.
