    Job summary

  • The ophthalmology department at Frimley Health is dedicated in providing excellent patient care to a wide patient group who experience many different eye conditions. The Orthoptic assistants will work closely with the Orthoptists, Nurses and Ophthalmologist within the eye department to providing high quality care to patients. The post holder will rotate between all our clinical areas, supporting and running clinics on and off site. It is a busy and fast paced department, with many exciting opportunities.
  • Main duties of the job

  • As an integral member of the Ophthalmic team, the post holder will provide support to other members of the multidisciplinary team, in the provision of high quality patient care.
  • Provide a range of non-nursing duties ensuring a sufficient and effective service to the unit at all times.
  • Carry out specialised ophthalmic tests and procedures that contribute to the efficient running of the service and pre-tests for the medical staff.

    Job responsibilities

  • To ensure that all patients, visitors and staff are treated in a courteous, professional and caring manner and receive prompt assistance when required.
  • To promote equality for all individuals, taking into consideration their cultural and religious beliefs, customs and values.
  • To promote patient independence and maintain the individuals dignity at all times.
  • To adhere to hospital policy in relation to patient confidentiality at all times.
  • To be aware of their responsibilities under the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act. Care should be taken in all aspects of work to ensure that these and other safety regulations, and Manual Handling Policy are adhered to.
  • To report any accidents and/or incidents occurring to patients, visitors, staff or oneself according to hospital policy.
  • To report any suspicious circumstances/individuals/packages immediately to the Nurse in Charge or their deputy.
  • To be aware of procedures to be followed in the case of Fire, Cardiac Arrest and any other emergencies.
  • To be aware that the Post-holder should not become involved in any financial matters with, or on behalf of a patient or relative, witnessing a Will, receipt of gifts etc. and to adhere to hospital policy on this issue.
  • As an important member of the team, the post holder should attend and participate in any meetings and training sessions as required.
  • To be aware of own levels of competence and at no time attempt tasks above and beyond their ability or training.

    Competencies

    Essential

  • Experience in computer skills
  • Able to work to a consistently high standard
  • Good interpersonal and team working skills under sometimes difficult conditions
  • Experience working in Ophthalmology, outpatients' department or day surgery unit
  • Desirable

  • Driving License for driving between sites
  • Qualifications

    Essential

  • GCSE or equivalent at c or above.
  • Experience in computer skills
  • Desirable

  • NVQ Level 3 or 4 in health and social care or working towards this
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Ability to perform area specific clinical competencies in line with core standards under direction of registered practitioner
  • Experience of working in a team, undertaking duties as requested
  • Desirable

  • Knowledge of clinical applications
