    We have an exciting opportunity for you to join the Occupational Therapy department at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. This role is part of a well established adult orthopaedic team to providing tailored, individualised care to patients with complex orthopaedic conditions including revision hip replacements, spinal surgery and upper limb surgery. This role is ideally suited to an existing or emerging band 6 occupational therapist.

    We are dedicated to support staff members upskill in both clinical and non clinical areas of practice. You will have excellent development opportunities in both clinical and non clinical areas of practice. You will be well supported by your clinical and professional OT supervisor, have access to CPD opportunities, as well as leadership support.

    Main duties of the job
    • To provide a comprehensive Occupational Therapy service for clients with a wide variety of complex and multiple disabilities within the speciality of adult orthopaedics in a busy ward setting
    • To independently assess and treat patients through the acute post-operative phase of inpatient care, including short stay patients and inpatient rehabilitation
    • To promote the occupational therapy role and ensure the smooth day to day running of the team
    • To effectively work alongside colleagues in the multi disciplinary team to achieve the patients goals and facilitate safe transition from hospital to discharge destination
    • To adopt and promote a culture of continuous learning and personal development
    • To teach and supervise junior members of the team, therapy technicians and occupational therapy students
    • To contribute to service improvement to maintain high quality clinical care
    • To deputise for the Band 7 lead occupational therapist as appropriate including attending meetings and performing managerial and clinical tasks
    • This post will be part of a weekend Occupational Therapy service supporting discharges and rehabilitation across the inpatient ward

    You will join a busy team occupational therapists who work in close collaboration with both physiotherapists and therapy technicians who manage a pre admission and inpatient adult orthopaedic service. You will be assisting the band 7 and 6 occupational therapists with the day to day running of the in-patients service and provide line management support for rotational band 5 occupational therapists, therapy technicians and students. For your professional development, you will be supported by a band 7 Occupational Therapist and the Clinical Specialist Therapy Team Lead to develop your clinical, managerial and service improvement skills, as well as having access to senior occupational therapy and physiotherapy colleagues within the wider therapies department.

    The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital therapy department has a well-established research and education focus. This includes an education, student, research and service improvement lead to support all staff members learning and development. There is regular access to internal and external CPD opportunities with a strong focus on leadership and clinical skill development.     Job Purpose summary

    To assess and treat routine and highly complex patients in the adult orthopaedic team, to teach junior staff and students and support the in developing the service.

    To provide cover for administrative, managerial and clinical tasks in the temporary absence of another member of the team, as appropriate to own level of experience. Person Specification Analytical & Judgment Skills Essential
    • Clinical reasoning skills
    Knowledge, Training & Experience Essential
    • 3 years minimum post qualification experience, including 6 months relevant clinical experience to the post
    • 6 months NHS experience
    • Degree in Occupational Therapy
    • Registered with the HCPC
    • Evidence of relevant CPD
    • Supervision experience and Teaching experience
    • Knowledge of biomechanical, cognitive behavioural and neurological treatment approaches applicable to clinical area
    Desirable
    • Experience with staff appraisal
    • Experience with clinical audit and outcome measures.
    • Previous experience at Band 6.
    • Awareness of some specialist equipment relevant to the post
    • Wheelchair assessment
    • Discharge planning
    • Member of the RCOT or recognised equivalent
    Communication & Relationship Skills Essential
    • Good written and spoken English
    • Able to communicate with a variety of people, occasionally in emotional distress
    • Understanding of team dynamics in relation to MDT working
    Desirable

    • Good organisation of self and time
