Experience

Freelance Content Creator: May 2020 – June 2022

While this initially started off as a hobby, content creating, particularly writing articles, became a job for me. During my two years as a freelance content creator, I wrote for a host of websites and held a temporary contract with tidalmarket.com to write for their blog (please visit this website for a portfolio of my work). Writing articles gave me a chance to refine my skills of written communication (and of Microsoft Office) and, in general, I believe that I gained a lot from this experience. One example of a skill that I have acquired as a result of working as a content creator is time management; at the time, I was a full time student so, at times, the workload was overwhelming. However, I learned how to tread a path where I was able to get my work done for both my job and school, and I believe this translated to more efficiency when working, and allowed me to work on my adaptability too. Through this job, I also learnt the importance of communication with my employer. Writing articles required constant communication with my employer(s) about the style and word count of the article, as well as the time by which they required it and allowed me to gain experience with sending emails to a range of teams, and employers.

SEO London – Demystifying the City Week (26/07/22 - 29/07/22)

Through the platform of SEO London, a charity that seeks to aid students ‘to broaden their horizons through access to academic, professional and enrichment opportunities’, I was given the chance to attend an insight week that sought to demystify the financial industry located within the city of London.  Throughout the week, we were hosted by different firms including BlackRock, Blackstone, Hg Capital, and Nomura. On each of the different days, I was given the opportunity to learn more about the finance industry via talks delivered by employees at the companies, and was given a chance to shadow an employee on each of the days too.

At the end of the week, I was given the chance to have a mock interview with an employee at Nomura, a tier one investment bank with roots in Japan. The mock interview gave me an experience of being in the ‘hot seat’ and through working on the feedback offered by my interviewer, I believe I have become a more well-rounded and employable individual. Moreover, I was given the chance to be part of a workshop called the ‘Confident Communicator’ hosted by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art; through this workshop, I believe I have become more approachable, and I have further worked on a skill (communication) that is vital in any job environment.

Goringe Accountants Work Experience - (01/08/22 - 05/08/22)

Working at a local accountancy firm by the name of Goringe Accountants for a week gave me a feel for the corporate world and allowed me to explore the different divisions within an accountancy firm. Throughout the week, I was given a brief introduction to the different functions of the firm which include auditing, tax returns, bookkeeping, statutory accounts, payroll, and general admin to name a few. In addition to this, I was given the opportunity to shadow different employees to get a sense of how to communicate with clients during meetings and to give me an idea of what a day in their life comprised of. I learnt the importance of teamwork as I was shadowing Sarah Jones, the personal assistant to the Managing Director and Chief Technical Officer – members of other teams were often willing to step in (often at times when they were on a break or during their lunch) and help Sarah if she was handling too much at one time, and I did my best to contribute to the smooth running of the company during the week too.

I found that maintaining relationships with clients is a huge contributing factor to why the company is successful and why clients choose to stay with Goringe in a landscape that is becoming increasingly more competitive. Moreover, I learnt the importance of being flexible; members of the team were often forced to reschedule meetings with clients to times that were not suitable for them, but did so without any complaints and found time to cater to the client. An example of this was when a client filed in new information about their statutory accounts, 2 days before the deadline for filing; I was given the responsibility of sifting through the information, and updating the accounts manually through the medium of Excel. While handling the accounts for the company, I found that the financial world can often be a high pressure environment, where results need to be delivered quickly and efficiently - I was given a rundown on what to do by the Statutory Accounts Manager and was given a deadline of 5pm on the same day to hand my work for the day in. I found that I was cutting into my lunch and breaks to complete the work but at the end of the day, it was rewarding to hand in my own work and be praised for my efforts by the team.

Education

GCSEs – I have achieved 8s and 9s in all my GCSEs. I achieved a 9 in English Literature, English Language, Physics and Biology. I achieved an 8 in Maths, History, Chemistry, Textiles, French and Computer Science.

A-Levels – A in OCR Mathematics, A in OCR Economics and C in AQA History (pending remark).
