About Badria Abdulraouf:

I describe myself as a team player with a willingness to learn. I’m very enthusiastic, motivated and able to get on with the task in hand. I’m reliable, responsible, willing and able to take a leadership role. I believe myself to be a confident and outgoing person with excellent communication skills. Being confident and able to speak my own mind does not deter me from taking direction; listening to others or taking on board their opinions. I pride myself on having a fantastic personality that can gel in any given circumstance, whether it is meeting new clients, families or colleagues. My friendly character allows me to be open and honest as well as being able to build a professional relationship.

Experience

I am currenting working as a midwife in a busy maternity unit in the West Midlands. Since qualifying, I have worked as a rotational midwife on the Post/Antenatal ward and Delivery Suite/Labour Ward. Although midwives can work autonomously, working as part of multidisciplinary team is key in providing the best possible care for women and their un/born babies.
At present, I’m a part of the core team on the Maternity Triage and Induction Units. The midwifery role within these departments incorporates antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. Midwifery skills such as undertaking maternal/neonatal observations, abdominal palpation, fetal auscultation, phlebotomy/cannulation, speculum/vaginal examinations, cardiotocography (CTG), administration of medications, breast feeding support etc. are essential in providing safe and effective care. The Maternity Triage unit is a fast-paced environment which allows me to encompass the standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Code. It is crucial that whilst working within this pressured high-risk area, prioritise women, practise effectively and always preserve safety whilst remaining professional at all times. Clear communication skills are vital when handing over to doctors so they have a full understanding of the situation and provide the best possible care to the women.
The Maternity Induction unit enables me to provide care to women who have not laboured spontaneously or are being induced for either maternal or fetal risks. This is undertaken by regular fetal monitoring using a CTG monitor, providing care and support in the latent phase of labour and transferring to Labour Ward/Delivery Suite accordingly.
Labour Ward/Delivery Suite allows me to provide one-to-one-woman centred care, either in a low or high-risk birth setting, by building a relationship whereby women trust you to look after her and her unborn baby in the intrapartum period and immediately following birth. Skills in obstetric emergencies are paramount and therefore I have yearly Practical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training (PROMT) to ensure that I am competent as a midwife. The Postnatal ward provides an environment whereby women can be supported with looking after their new born baby. Care is dependent on the type of delivery a woman had, vaginal, instrumental or caesarean section. As a midwife, daily postnatal checks on both mother and baby will be undertaken as well as offering support with infant feeding either by breast or formula under the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI). Additional care may be required if a baby was undergoing phototherapy treatment for jaundice and further investigations maybe required blood tests etc.
