General Medicine nurses in the UK play a crucial role in providing comprehensive care to patients with a wide range of medical conditions. Their duties encompass various aspects of patient care, including assessment, treatment, and patient education. A typical day for a General Medicine nurse involves a diverse set of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the well-being and recovery of patients.

Assessment and Monitoring:

General Medicine nurses are responsible for conducting thorough assessments of patients upon admission, as well as during their hospital stay. This involves taking detailed medical histories, performing physical examinations, and documenting patients' vital signs, symptoms, and overall health status. Nurses closely monitor patients' conditions, including their response to treatment, and promptly report any significant changes to the medical team. They also administer medications, intravenous fluids, and other treatments as prescribed, while carefully observing for any adverse reactions.

Collaboration and Coordination:

General Medicine nurses work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, specialists, therapists, and other healthcare professionals, to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients. They communicate patient progress, concerns, and updates to the medical team and participate in care conferences to ensure coordinated and effective patient care. Nurses also serve as advocates for their patients, ensuring that their needs are met and that they receive the best possible care throughout their hospitalization.

Patient Education and Support:

In addition to providing medical care, General Medicine nurses play a vital role in educating patients and their families about their conditions, treatments, and self-care upon discharge. They offer guidance on medication management, lifestyle modifications, and symptom recognition, empowering patients to actively participate in their recovery process. Nurses also provide emotional support, addressing patients' concerns and alleviating anxieties related to their medical conditions and hospitalization.

Documentation and Record-Keeping:

Accurate and thorough documentation is a fundamental aspect of a General Medicine nurse's role. They meticulously record patient assessments, vital signs, medications administered, treatments provided, and any changes in the patient's condition. This documentation is vital for maintaining continuity of care, ensuring patient safety, and facilitating effective communication among healthcare team members.

Adaptability and Critical Thinking:

General Medicine nurses must be adaptable and adept at critical thinking, as they often encounter patients with diverse and complex medical needs. They must be prepared to respond to emergencies, manage multiple patients simultaneously, and make quick, informed decisions to ensure the best possible outcomes for their patients.

In summary, General Medicine nurses in the UK are integral members of the healthcare team, providing holistic care to patients with a wide range of medical conditions. Their dedication, expertise, and compassion contribute significantly to the well-being and recovery of patients under their care.

Clinical support worker: NHS GG& GRI (2017-2022)

I am tenacious in my ability to have the patience required in order to gain that essential trust and long-lasting rapport. This is something I have achieved several times within my last place of work. As well as person centered care I am also responsible for keeping paper work up to date. Written and oral communication skills with service users and colleagues is something I excel at. Examples of which would be the many times I liaise with the MDT to raise any concerns with patient care or health need. I am also an advocate on behalf of the patients I look after and get the chance to speak on their behalf when in team meetings or if a review in a person’s care was needed. I feel my abilities have reflected well on the NHS. Once again, I loved the opportunity to go the extra mile for patient and their care need.

Clinical support worker- Hospital at night service (2018 -2022)

Attend the regular Meetings unless there is an emergency situation. Manage own workload using IT computer systems. There are many situations that you attend and a patient could be detreating and with any change in the condition of the patient will be communicated verbally to the Hospital at Night team and the nurse in charge of the ward. Participated and assists in the updating and completion of accurate patient documentation. Complied with all Health and Safety Legislation and policies with particular regard to COSHH, Fire, Infection Control and Manual Handling. Carried out all duties in accordance with NHSGGC organisational policies and procedure and followed HaN Operational Policy.  Reported and documents any patient concerns or untoward incidents to the Hospital at Night team and / or nurse in charge of the ward / department.
